The Cancer Council: Consuming Moderate Levels of Alcohol Heightens Your Chance of Throat & Mouth Cancers

According to ABC News, researchers from the Cancer Council and the University of Melbourne followed data which tracked 41,000 adults’ drinking habits since the early 1990’s. The data collected suggests the median lifelong consumption of four or more standard alcoholic beverages everyday is twice as likely to increase the risk of developing cancer of the mouth and throat, versus those who consumed no alcohol at all.

Annually, 3,000 instances of cancers across Australia are caused by long term use of alcohol; in addition, nearly 350 deaths are linked to long term alcohol use, according to Cancer Council researchers.

Australians have been warned by the Cancer Council to maintain a two drink maximum if they want to decrease their chances of developing cancer. This message comes in response to “many people not understanding the risks of lifetime drinking,” according to Craig Sinclair of the Cancer Council of Victoria. Craig also shared they have known for quite some time drinking alcohol is associated with a multitude of cancers such as cancer of the bowel, breast, mouth, and throat.

The Cancer Council Says Consuming Moderate Levels of Alcohol Can Heighten Your Chance of Throat and Mouth CancersA separate poll which was conducted online by the Cancer Council discovered many Victorians were not aware of what one standard drink is constituted as. According to the Cancer Council only 13 percent of respondents knew the number of standard drinks within a wine bottle.

The Council warns the lack of knowledge on alcohol consumption has the possibility to cause people to underestimate how much alcohol they have consumed, which places them at higher risk. “Many people don’t realise that if they are choosing to drink alcohol at moderate or more significant levels, there is that direct link to cancer,” Mr Sinclair said.

Australia’s definition of moderate drinking differs from the United States definition. In the U.S. moderate drinking is considered having one drink per day for women and up to two per day for men, according to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. It has also been stated by the Dietary Guidelines moderate alcohol intake is associated with increased risk of breast cancer, and other injuries.
