Caitlyn Jenner Helps Other Transgender People through New Blog & Suicide Prevention Resources

It seems like the LGBT community is making meaningful strides towards equality here in the states; with the recent celebration of the Supreme Court legalizing gay marriage across the country, one would think we’re heading in the right direction towards equality for all. While in large part (we hope) that’s true, we have some doubts about the reception of the transgender community, who hasn’t celebrated as much success in the legal sphere of things. Perhaps the most infamous transgender woman to date is Caitlyn Jenner, who was hailed as an Olympic gold medal decathlete when she was still Bruce Jenner (and hey, she did that, it still counts), and rose further in the public eye with the popularity of the farcical Keeping Up with the Kardashians. What can I say? We all have different tastes.
Fortunately Cait is doing something that can potentially help change the lives of thousands around the country who are struggling with transitioning from the gender they were born and the gender they were meant to be.

It’s often misconstrued one who transitions from either male or female or female to male is gay. Gender identity and sexuality are actually two separate spheres of personal awareness. (Science says, you non-believers!)

Although one who decides to change their gender may indeed be gay, this is by no means a hard and fast rule to live by. Many who transition from either male to female or female to male will continue to date the same people they’ve always been attracted to.

To put it bluntly, if a woman decides she wants to transition to a male, that doesn’t mean she wants to pursue females. In fact, transgender (sometimes called trans) people often “make the switch” so their outside suits their inside- making their current preferences virtually unchanged (unless of course that same person is struggling as being considered “gay,” which is still looked down upon by traditional and conservative families- in which case, “making the switch” may make it easier for that person to pursue who they’ve always wanted.)

Confusing? I know. But not really, if you can just accept not all transgender people are gay, and some of them are- just like non-transgender people. We’re all the same! Haza

Cait’s personal blog, which has launched before her new documentary series, according to the Inquisitr, will be dedicated to addressing transgender issues, calling to question unfair social stigmas, and debunking them entirely. Jenner will also share her own personal transformation stories and insights, as she believes they will help others become the people they were always meant to be.

One thing about the transgender community that many may not be aware of, is the insanely high suicide rates and propensity for substance abuse. According to the Miami herald an alarming 50 percent of transgender people commit suicide. 50 percent. Can you imagine living in a body that you feel like an outsider in, day in and day out? I can’t.

As Jenner’s blog becomes more developed, according to the Inquisitr, there will be resources for transgender people to utilize, including suicide prevention, employment readiness training, and legal advice.

But What Can You Do If You’re Not Transgender?

Get educated! It doesn’t matter if you’re not a transgender person, like learning about the nature of drug and alcohol addiction, learning the ins and outs of someone else’s life can help you gain critical insight on what they go through everyday, living outside of the “normal” social spectrum, and help alleviate some of your own personal biases and assumptions.

The unfortunate fact is many people who seem to write the rules about what transgender people are and aren’t, have never actually intimately interacted with one! So go find out for yourself. Watch documentaries, read books, and reach out online to discover what it means to be a transgender person. Asking questions is the only way to learn more, so ask away!

I myself, was one of the people who assumed people who transitioned from male to female, or vise versa wanted to date the opposite sex. And I was completely wrong! So don’t assume, get out there and start asking questions. The only way the stigma surrounding transgender people will dissipate is if we all play an active role in disbanding it.
