Grammy Award Winning Artist Macklemore Opens Up About Relapsing Last Year

Rap artist Macklemore, known for radio hits such as “Can’t Hold Us,” has opened up about the drug relapse he suffered in 2014, according to ABC News. He admitted that he held it together for quite some time before he stopped participating in 12-step meetings.

Macklemore attributes his relapse to trying to cope with fame. “I was burnt out. I was super-stressed. We weren’t sleeping — doing a show every day, zigzagging all over the country,” said Macklemore. “In terms of the media, I was getting put into a box that I never saw for myself. The pressure and the fame – everything … I just wanted to escape,”  quotes ABC News. Macklemore and his frequent collaborator, Ryan Lewis, grew to fame in the year 2013 as a result of their record selling over one million copies, going on tour, and being nominated for seven Grammys.

The 32-year-old rapper suffered from drug and alcohol addiction, which resulted in him being admitted to the hospital then transitioning into rehab in 2008. He even mentioned to ABC News’ Dan Harris his fear of falling victim to a relapse after his and Ryan Lewis’ “wild ride” calmed down.

Macklemore’s fears came to fruition, he shared with Complex in an interview that he began abusing sleeping pills and marijuana last year causing work on his next record to come to a halt.  In the interview he went into details about his marijuana use, sharing that he attended meetings with management with sunglasses on and had was driving around smoking, trying not to get caught like he did 15 years ago as a teen. “I felt so dumb. I felt like I’m just wasting time. What am I escaping here?” he told the magazine.

He attributes his fiancee Tricia Davis’ pregnancy with their first child as giving him the push to get clean again. The couple announced they were expecting their first child in January of this year. He admits that he told himself he needed to grow up immediately upon learning of Tricia’s pregnancy.

Macklemore revealed that he used meditation, yoga, journaling, and meetings to help him escape his relapse. The artist says that the fame, money, attention, touring and endorsements don’t come  close to being as fulfilling or deserving of gratitude as his participation in 12-step meetings and being sober.
