As the fourth state to ratify recreational marijuana, Oregon is receiving exceptional praise from pro-legalization activists- except its recreational use laws are a tad bit counterintuitive.
According to The Week, despite Oregon’s new marijuana policies, it is still unlawful to purchase cannabis substances. The only way (it would seem) to legally partake in using marijuana is to grow it yourself. Disgruntled activists are fighting back against restrictive regulations by proposing a bill making marijuana legal to sell in certified dispensaries. (I guess not everyone wants to be a pot farmer.) If the bill is well received, the sale of marijuana may be approved as early as October 1st.
Despite whatever side you’re on in the great marijuana debate, it’s imperative proper precautions are taken to prevent marijuana addiction. Even though the substance is continuing to become legalized throughout the nation, akin to alcohol, cannabis does have the potential to become addictive, and harmful to its users. Approximately 17% of all marijuana smokers will become addicted to the substance without proper, responsible usage.
Just like refraining from drinking and drinking, it’s important to remember marijuana is a substance which impairs your mental and physical abilities. Don’t add fuel to the anti-marijuana fire (because, trust us, there’s plenty of that) and make sure your own conduct, in legalized states, only emulates responsible usage.
Although marijuana has the potential of being a gateway drug, with the proper education on the potential detriments of marijuana use, those living in states where marijuana is legal can be responsible users, like many are responsible drinkers.
