Akin to any addiction, overconsumption of junk…

Akin to any addiction, overconsumption of junk food causes the same tolerance building effects many addictive substances do. The reason why you reach for that extra cookie? You’re addicted! Well, perhaps mild junk food addiction isn’t enough to purport you have a chronic addiction problem, but the science behind junk food and saturated fat says we develop a tolerance to delicious, fatty foods- and enjoy them less. So what do we do? Reach for that second cookie. This behavior mirrors drug and alcohol addiction. As users of addictive substances are less sensitive to the first hit (or bite, in this case) and seek the high they experienced when first exposed to the addictive substance.

According to Yahoo Health studies have shown saturated fat causes more than just weight gain, but slowly destroys a critical chemical in the brain which safeguards us against Alzheimer’s disease. Fortunately mild cases of junk food addiction don’t typically need any special treatment, outside of being conscience of what you eat. The main objective when switching out addictive substances is not limitation, but expansion!

If you limit yourself to a restrictive diet it’s likely to fail- as is the same case with drug and alcohol addiction. Instead of foregoing everything, making healthy substitutions in your life is the key to overcoming any addiction. Did you know it takes 21 days to break a habit? If you take one day, one step at a time, anything is possible!
