FBI Agent’s Drug Addiction Lead to the Release of 28 Convicted Drug Dealers

Ex-FBI Agent Matthew Lowry’s desperate prescription drug addiction lead to the release of 28 convicted drug felons, which included manufactures and dealers, back onto the streets, according to the Washington Post. Merciless as the reaper, addiction does not discriminate, and has single-handedly destroyed the potentially lucrative career for Ex-agent Lowry.

When Lowry knew his addiction to his pain medications were slowly changing the tides of his life, his wife was already suspicious of his behavior. Pregnant with their first child, she began confronting him about a habit which would eventually lead to the release of convicted drug felons, who willingly pleaded guilty in their involvement with massive drug operations.

It began in the car.

Lowry’s transition from prescription drugs to heroin, that is. Alone with an evidence bag kept from one of his first drug busts, the then FBI agent, who recently celebrated a promotion to an elite task force of the brigade poised to dismantle the prolific drug dealers polluting the border of Maryland, snorted heroin for the first time.

GFBI Agent’s Drug Addiction Lead to the Release of 28 Convicted Drug Dealersoing through withdrawal from prescription medications made him do it. He was shaky, sick, and unable to focus on everyday tasks absent the medications which most likely began to alter the way his brain functioned. Compounded by the fact his wife grew vigilant and inquisitive about his pill popping, Lowry was desperate to find another means to quell the pangs longing for the release of opiates.

His first hit of heroin was snorted off an FBI notebook. Lowry didn’t stop chasing heroin’s high- all the way until his work in the agency was recognized for the successful take-down of a heroin and cocaine ring responsible for the influx of the illicit substances on the streets.

Heroin dotted the days of his life, and helped to mark the birth of his son, and stipple the days spent with his father, who has more than 40 years of law enforcement under his belt. His heroin rampage lasted for more than a year, while working full time for the FBI to put away heroin dealers.

Finally the drug caught up with him. And the law’s heel was quick to boot him out of the FBI and slap him with a medley of federal charges for misconduct, drug use, and tampering with evidence, according to the Washington Post.

Because of his misconduct more than 28 convicted drug offenders will be released (more may follow), and instead Lowry will face charges in an upcoming federal court date slated for July 9th. More than 64 criminal charges await sentencing.

The Washington Post quotes a defeated Lowry,

“I worked so hard, and now it’s gone. This is all I wanted to do, and I lost it all because of an addiction.”
