Charleston Church Shooting, Drugs & Race Wars: Expert Says Suboxone Made Dylan Roof Do It

After the wake of the Charleston Church Shooting, Dylan Roof’s name is in the forefront of everyone’s mind. Since the atrocity took place, the nation has erupted in heated debates about race, the Confederate flag, gun policy, and the role suboxone may have played in the massacre. Initially we piggy backed off Adrian Wyllie’s idea that pharmaceuticals may be the source of mass shootings and tragedies, including the instance of the Charleston Church Shooting- but now WWL has released new expert commentary about the role suboxone may have played in Dylan Roof’s behavior which spurred him to murder.

WWL quotes Neurologist Dr. Harry Gould, who is the director of the Pain Program at LSU Health Sciences Center,

“I’ve had a couple of people that have been on oxycodone . . .  where they have hallucinations and they, [behave] almost like schizophrenia [patients]. They’re paranoid. They act out in unusual ways that are not socially appropriate.”

Dr. Gould continues, in reference to the Charleston Church Shooting,

“The experience I’ve had with some people on other opiates which happened, I’m not surprised that it could happen.”

Before we get the pitchforks and try to ban suboxone, and other maintenance therapy opiates, like methadone, we first must take into consideration, thus far, there is no empirical proof Roof would have abnegated from his actions without his past of opiate abuse. In fact, we’re not even sure if we has under the influence of suboxone at the time of the tragedy.

What we can assume is opiates may have played a role in the perversion of his mind, to the extent in which Roof considered shooting innocent people in the first place. Recent reports have found Roof’s first target was intended to be Charleston University, but according to the Independent, Roof could not figure out a way passed security.

Statements made by Roof’s friends reveal shocking motivators behind the shooting, which may or may not have been influenced by his drug use, or perhaps the racially prejudice environment he grew up in.

It’s no secret there are racial strains here in the States, and Roof is a dangerous extreme of the spectrum. The Independent quotes Christon Scriven,

“[Dylann said] he was going to hurt a bunch of people.

‘I said, ‘What did you say? Why do you want to hurt those people in charleston?’

“He just said, ‘In seven days. . . I have seven days.’”

7856692_sScriven alleges after a night of drunken blabber, he hid Roof’s .45 caliber in the crevices of air conditioning vents in the mobile home they were drinking in.

In alleged reports during the shooting Roof said, “You are raping our women and taking over the country. . . I have to do it,” as quoted by Independent.

Meek, Roof’s neighbor in a mobile home community, quotes Roof in a drunken stupor, “Blacks [are] taking over the world, someone [needs] to do something about it for the white race,” as quoted by the Independent.

If we give everyone here quoted the benefit of the doubt, and hold their word as the ultimate truth, it would seem racism is the root of Roof’s motive- but unfortunately, it wouldn’t be the first time racial tensions have been manipulated to divide our country further.

Even though we can’t be certain without the shadow of a doubt what lead Roof to slaughter nine members of the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, I imagine our own imaginations and renderings of his intent are enough to keep us up at night.

In spite of his seemingly obvious racial agenda, if we come together in peace, support, and unity without fear or condemnation of race, with open hearts and open eyes to right the wrongs we have done to each other, only then may we rise above the turmoil recent racial tensions have precipitated among law enforcement and abominations like the Charleston Church shooting.
