Insanely Costly Anti-Opiate Initiative Proposed by Mass. Opiate Task force Totals $27 Million

Massachusetts has been bust attempting to get a handle on their opiate epidemic which has boosted their overdose fatalities over the last few years. Gov. Charlie Baker has appointed a new task force, aptly referred to as the opiate task force, who endeavours to formulate actionable solutions to make a difference in the opiate crisis. Recently they have proposed a gargantuan $27 million initiative to clean up the streets; the strategy is comprised of 65 recommendations for the state to consider.

Gov. Baker took the stand to address the public in a statement, and is quoted by Mass Live,

“The solution to eradicating opioids is not a one-size-fits-all approach, and will require all of us to rethink the way we treat addiction. Today’s announcements are a first step and we will aggressively pursue reforms to save lives.”

The opiate task force is assembled by 18 members who have proposed the following recommendations:

  • Add an additional 100 treatment beds to the Massachusetts Dept. of Public Health by July 2016
  • Make walk-ins available for immediate treatment and emergency treatment
  • Addiction coach availability in ERs
  • Create mobile addiction units
  • Creation of a statewide database for addiction treatment centers
  • Forging an alliance with federal officials to unpin restrictors on physicians able to prescribe maintenance therapy medications
  • Mandatory pharmacy refills/prescriptions within 24 hours
  • Bulk purchasing power for Narcan
  • Improve good samaritan laws
  • Revamping of the Civil Commitment law, enabling persons to be admitted to treatment who display obvious signs of addiction without consent
  • Implementing drug takeback program
  • Assigning addiction specialists to established health boards
  • Insurance reforms
  • certification for drug and alcohol free housing
  • Opening of a new recovery high school

You get the picture. Ultimately the opiate task force’s recommendations are poised to make addiction a disease treatable in the public domain, and regarded as a common disease.

What are some of your suggestions about reforming drug laws in your own state?
