Mexican Drug Lord Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán Escapes Prison for the Second Time

According to Forbes, Mexico’s National Security Commission has confirmed that  Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán, the world’s most dangerous drug trafficker, escaped from prison.

The statement issued by the National Security Commission shared that on Saturday, July 11th, surveillance camera at Altiplano federal prison, a maximum security Mexican prison, last saw El Chapo approaching the shower area designated for prisoners to also wash their belongings. After some time, El Chapo had not reappeared leading officials to check his cell.

Mexican Drug Lord Joaquín 'El Chapo' Guzmán Escapes Prison For The Second TimeUpon arrival to El Chapo’s cell, officials found it empty and issued an alert. According to National Security Commissioner Monte Alejandro Rubido, El Chapo escaped through a 1,500-meter tunnel near the shower area.

Mexican officials have initiated a manhunt, in addition to closing down Toluca Airport, which is located about 45 minutes away from the prison.

According to reports, El Chapo was arrested in February 2014 after being on the run for 13 years, and had allegedly been under 24-hour security watch following the arrest. This is the second time in which El Chapo has successfully escaped prison, despite government officials insisting that he could not escape.

El Chapo escaped a high-security prison for the first time in 2001; it has been alleged that he escaped through a laundry cart. He was later apprehended in February 2014 and arrested in Mazatlán, a port city in Sinaloa state. During the course of El Chapo’s 13-year long escape, the U.S. and Mexican governments’ actions, such as targeting his multi-million dollar money laundering operation, failed.

Being deemed as the #1 illicit drug supplier and the head of the Sinaloa cartel, impeccable entrepreneurial skills, and his power to bribe Mexican officials, El Chapo was named one of the world’s most powerful people on the Forbes’ list before being dropped in 2014.

Do you believe El Chapo used his power to bribe employees of the prison to assist in his escape?
