NFL Is Cracking Down On Players Who Are Violating The Substance Abuse Policy

According to the Daily Reflector, four NFL superstars have been suspended for violating various terms of  the organization’s drug policy.

Among the the four suspended includes Antonio Gates of the San Diego Chargers, Sheldon Richardson of the New York Jets, Rolando McClain of the Dallas Cowboys, and Datone Jones of the Green Bay Packers, according to reports.

NFL Is Cracking Down On Players Who Are Violating The Substance Abuse PolicyThree time All-Pro, tight end Antonio Gates is being suspended due to violating the organization’s ban on consuming performance enhancing drugs. Defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson and linebacker Rolando McClain have been suspended for violating terms of the substance abuse policy. Defensive end Datone Jones was also suspended for a substance abuse violation.

According to reports, all suspensions will be executed without pay. Players will still be eligible to participate in training camp and preseason games. Jones will have to sit out the season opener and return during Week 2, McClain and Gates will be eligible to play during Week 5, and the Jets will have a bye week during Week five, therefore Richardson will have to wait until Week 6 to start.

Gates, Richardson, and MClain each issued apologies in their statements.

“In an effort to recover from a long season, and although I was unaware at the time, I regret to confirm that I tested positive for a substance that is currently on the NFL banned substance list. I have always believed that ignorance is no excuse when it comes to these issues, and I take full responsibility for my actions,” said Gates, as quoted by the Daily Reflector.
Richardson shared his sentiments by stating he doesn’t want his substance abuse violation to “take away from what the team is trying to accomplish,” according to the Daily Reflector.

According to reports, McClain’s suspension could hurt the Cowboys due to the team now having to start the season without two of their essential defenders. “I will not break the rules of my profession in the future, and I regret my error,” McClain said.

For many years the NFL has imposed consequences for violating their substance abuse policy, however certain players continue to rebel.

Do you think the NFL should get more strict with the consequences for violating the substance abuse policy? Is a suspension for a few games enough?
