Lawsuit Against CVS Claims the Company Overcharged Customers for Generic Drugs

According to NBC News, CVS Health Corporation is being accused of deliberately overcharging customers for generic drugs by making claims to the customers insurance companies at exaggerated prices in a lawsuit which has been filed this week at a San Francisco federal court.

The lawsuit alleges that as a result of CVS inflating the prices of generic drugs, customers incurred higher co-pays which exceeded the costs of paying for the drugs with no insurance or participating in the CVS discount program.

Kristen Broz, an attorney with Haufield, the firm which filed the lawsuit against CVS, is quoted by NBC,“We’ve seen people who pay $20 for a 30-day supply as their co-payments on a drug that was $11.99 for a 90-day supply had they been in the [discount program].” Broz suggested hundreds of thousands of customers have possibly been affected since 2008, according to her estimate.

Lawsuit Against CVS Claims The Company Overcharged Customers For Generic Drugs The lawsuit filed by Hausfield seeks class-action status, a court order forbidding CVS from participating in such behaviors, and damages which have been unspecified.

Michael DeAngelis, CVS Health spokesman says the company has not been served with the lawsuit as of yet, so there are no comments to be made at the moment. However, DeAngelis did mention that co-pays are contingent upon a patient’s prescription coverage plan, and that a similar suit was dismissed in Massachusetts.

According to the lawsuit, one of the issues within the is CVS’s “Health Savings Pass” program, which provides discounts to those who do not have health insurance or opt out of using their insurance on a multitude of generic prescription medications, such as generic brands of Penicillin and Prozac. The suit claims that in lieu of presenting insurance companies with the discounted price provided through their savings program, CVS instead reported the more expensive price that a normal CVS customer not apart of the savings program would pay. As a result, customers were then charged higher co-pays.
The lawsuit claims CVS used the Health Savings Pass program to maintain and increase its market share by averting discounted prices from its competitors. Nonetheless, CVS used the program to serve as a mechanism to conceal the company’s actual and customary prices from third party payers.

Autopsy Affirms Victoria Siegel Died from Methadone Drug Overdose

As the fans of the Queen of Versailles and those who knew the beautiful Victoria Sigel continue to mourn her passing in June of this year, the results of her autopsy confirm suspicions her death was caused by her addiction to Xanax. Victoria was prescribed Xanax for an anxiety condition, but the medication which was intended to make her life easier would inadvertently ultimately rob her of it. Knowing she had an addiction to the depressant drug, Victoria willingly checked herself into rehab to overcome her addiction. Unfortunately, after a rough spat with her boyfriend and the involvement of his ex-girlfriend, Victoria relapsed and died from acute methadone and sertraline toxicity,” according to Inside Edition.

Methadone is typically used to treat addictions to opiates and Sertraline is a medication prescribed to alleviate depression.

Since her death, Victoria’s mother, Jackie Siegel, has not returned to their home in North Florida, Inside edition quotes her lamenting,

“As a mother, I can say it’s the most horrible thing that I have ever, ever experienced. Personally I have not stepped foot in the house since Victoria died.”

Victoria’s father, Davis Siegel, has also avoided the house since her death.

In an attempt to glean a measure of hope in one of their darkest hours, the Siegel family has started a charity, called Victoria’s Voice Foundation, to help teenagers struggling with drug addiction to get the help they need before tragedy strikes.

Inside Edition quotes David Siegel,

“We’re going to win this battle. We can’t save everybody but we’re going to make a dent. . . Her legacy is going to be that many people will live because she died.”

Our hearts go out to those mourning the loss of Victoria Siegel. May she rest in peace, and be the beacon who will help others get treatment for their substance use disorders.

Dual Diagnosis in Drug Rehab is More Common than You May Think

Expert Insight from Gilbert Lichstein, Program Director, Gateway Chicago West

4 in a Series of 4

Gateway Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers employs evidenced-based practices to create meaningful, personalized treatment programs. We believe there is more than one pathway to recovery so we expose clients to a wide array of treatment methodologies. This series explores some of those methodologies.

Dual Diagnosis in Drug Rehab

dual diagnosis and drug rehabThe Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) states that 80% of individuals with addiction issues have a co-occurring Axis 1 mental health issue, also known as a dual diagnosis. Axis 1 disorders include depression, mania, excessive anxiety and psychosis.

One of Gateway’s distinguishing features is the depth with which we are able to address both issues. Upon arriving at Gateway, clients are given a comprehensive assessment. Should they be found to have both a substance abuse and an Axis 1 mental health issue, they are admitted to our dual-diagnosis unit.

Treating both diagnoses simultaneously truly helps the person free themselves from a destructive cycle, which greatly enhances the likelihood of successful treatment. Gateway’s personalized drug rehab plans address each individual’s specific needs.

Another unique aspect of Gateway’s methodology is our dual diagnosis group, which is offered in inpatient treatment. Individuals in treatment may also elect to involve family and loved ones in their recovery by participating in our family group component.

It’s very important to Gateway that our systems and staff reduce the stigmas that may be attached to substance abuse or a mental health disorder. We value a shame-free approach to treatment and want people to feel like themselves; like they are thriving rather than just getting by. Given the appropriate support, knowledge and skill building, clients are able to recover.

The dual diagnosis program at Gateway is measurable, using established tools that help us to assess, reassess and continually strengthen integrated treatment within our programs. This and many other features contribute to making Gateway a recognized leader among behavioral health providers offering substance abuse treatment as well as dual diagnosis treatment.

Canadian Rapper Madchild Lost $3 Million to Drug Addiction, and Claims He Is Recovered

If you want to put losing money because of an addiction into perspective, consider losing the $3 million dollars to a substance use disorder Canadian rapper, Madchild, did. And you’re complaining about the cost of a pack of cigarettes. (Well, they are pretty expensive.) According to Hip Hop DX, Madchild is on the straight and narrow after his costly opiate addiction. The rapper is working towards rebuilding his empire and recovering from the monetary damage his addiction inflicted upon his hard work. Many who allow their substance use disorders to spiral out of control become bankrupt, and in the worst case scenarios, homeless, because chasing the high becomes more important than other essential necessities. In severe cases, chronic addiction trumps eating.

Hip Hop DX quotes Madchild admitting he is still battling staying completely sober, but he has successfully abstained from opiates,

“My life is a blessing, so I’m not complaining . . . You can’t say that I’ve been exactly sober. But you can say that I’ve been off opioids for four years.”

In the spirit of helping himself, and his fellow bandmates stay away from the spiraling descent into addiction, Madchild has made a new tour bus rules:

✓ Rule #1: Drinking is permitted only twice a month!

✓ Rule # 2: If you can’t follow rule number one, you are to stay sober entirely!

We think it’s a pretty sound plan.

Madchild is quoted by Hip Hop DX,

“You don’t need to get hammered every night, sloppy, o have a good time. And it’s just [going to] get better. . . where we show up on time and we’re there to handle our business.”

One of the most critical aspects of recovery is setting goals for yourself that are attainable- and Madchild is showing the entire Canadian rap community how to do that by setting a fine example. Limiting the shenanigans on his tour bus will help him from not overindulging, and may save a couple of his band mates from falling down the same path he once did.

What are some of the goals you set for yourself?

Grammy Award Winning Artist Macklemore Opens Up About Relapsing Last Year

Rap artist Macklemore, known for radio hits such as “Can’t Hold Us,” has opened up about the drug relapse he suffered in 2014, according to ABC News. He admitted that he held it together for quite some time before he stopped participating in 12-step meetings.

Macklemore attributes his relapse to trying to cope with fame. “I was burnt out. I was super-stressed. We weren’t sleeping — doing a show every day, zigzagging all over the country,” said Macklemore. “In terms of the media, I was getting put into a box that I never saw for myself. The pressure and the fame – everything … I just wanted to escape,”  quotes ABC News. Macklemore and his frequent collaborator, Ryan Lewis, grew to fame in the year 2013 as a result of their record selling over one million copies, going on tour, and being nominated for seven Grammys.

The 32-year-old rapper suffered from drug and alcohol addiction, which resulted in him being admitted to the hospital then transitioning into rehab in 2008. He even mentioned to ABC News’ Dan Harris his fear of falling victim to a relapse after his and Ryan Lewis’ “wild ride” calmed down.

Macklemore’s fears came to fruition, he shared with Complex in an interview that he began abusing sleeping pills and marijuana last year causing work on his next record to come to a halt.  In the interview he went into details about his marijuana use, sharing that he attended meetings with management with sunglasses on and had was driving around smoking, trying not to get caught like he did 15 years ago as a teen. “I felt so dumb. I felt like I’m just wasting time. What am I escaping here?” he told the magazine.

He attributes his fiancee Tricia Davis’ pregnancy with their first child as giving him the push to get clean again. The couple announced they were expecting their first child in January of this year. He admits that he told himself he needed to grow up immediately upon learning of Tricia’s pregnancy.

Macklemore revealed that he used meditation, yoga, journaling, and meetings to help him escape his relapse. The artist says that the fame, money, attention, touring and endorsements don’t come  close to being as fulfilling or deserving of gratitude as his participation in 12-step meetings and being sober.

What would be your inspiration for breaking a bad habit?

Can I Take My Cholesterol Medication To Rehab?

Can I take my cholesterol medication to rehab

Entering rehab for alcohol addiction can seem daunting. There may be a lot on your mind; you might be stressed; maybe you’re even feeling angry that you are headed into rehab and the furthest thing from your mind is what you are allowed to bring. Or maybe, depending on your situation, if this is your first time going into a rehab facility, you may be wondering what you can bring: such as cholesterol medication. A general rule of thumb is that if you have prescription medications, you may not necessarily have to worry about bringing them. Most facilities will have a staff member administer your prescription medication (including cholesterol medication) because those types of medications should already be on-site. Depending on which rehab facility you check into, visit their website, call the facility, or talk to your doctor and make sure what items you can and cannot bring.

Some facilities differ on what types of medicines you’re able to have along with you. For example, some facilities allow you to bring over-the-counter medications, but only if they are new and unopened. And some places allow you to bring multi-vitamins. Also, even after checking what items are generally allowed at the facility, if you are still unsure about whether your prescription medication is acceptable, it is best to ask. Sometimes certain prescription medications are allowed on-site or not allowed, depending on the individual and a case-by-case basis. Some medicines may be allowed for you and not others and vice-versa.

Habit-Forming Medications: Not Allowed In Rehab

In general, any drug that can be habit-forming, such as benzodiazepines or opioids, will not be allowed. Non-habit-forming medications, such as SSRIs or antidepressants, will be allowed. You and your healthcare provider will be able to determine what medications you will be allowed and from there your medicines will be locked away or placed wherever patients do not have access. Then a member of the staff at the rehab facility will administer those medications to you as they are prescribed.

Some medications can actually cause harm to your progress in treatment because they could trigger your addictions. Your doctor (and rehab facility) will check to make sure that the prescription drugs that you are taking will not affect your addiction. If that is the case, a safer medication will commonly be prescribed in its place.

If you are about to go into rehab and are in a hurry to find quick answers, here is a general recap:

  • You may be able to leave your prescription medications at home. Most facilities will have common prescription medications already there to administer to you. Check first before your arrival at the rehab facility whether you need to bring specific medications (such as cholesterol medication) or if you can leave them at home.
  • Visit the website or call the facility if you are unsure of what prescription medications are allowed. Sometimes it varies and depends on an individual basis.
  • Not all facilities are the same. If you attended one rehab facility but have switched to another, always check their rules and policies. Things might have changed.
  • You and your doctor will determine which medications you will absolutely need to take with you and then those medications will be administered by the staff.
  • Habit-forming drugs will not be allowed and non-habit-forming drugs should be allowed. Again, ask if you have questions.
  • If your rehab facility thinks a certain medication may cause delayed progress in your treatment (such as triggering an addiction), they will prescribe a safer alternative.
  • When in doubt about your prescription medications, always ask for clarification.

The CDC Warns of Consuming Edible Marijuana After Death of Teenage Boy

According to Medical News Today, the CDC is concerned about the dangers of edible marijuana. Concern has been raised after marijuana intoxication was cited as the main contributing factor in the death of a teenage boy who jumped from the fourth-floor balcony of a Colorado hotel. Reports state that the fatal incident was a result of the boy consuming an entire edible cookie, which equates to six and a half servings.

Police reports revealed that the 19-year-old Levy Thamba, initially ate a piece of the cookie after purchasing it as recommended, however after about 30 to 60 minutes of not feeling the effects, Thamba consumed the rest of the cookie. Claims state that Thamba’s behavior grew hostile and his speech became erratic just two hours after eating the cookie. Approximately two and a half hours after consuming the cookie, Thamba jumped to his death. Police reports state prior to Thamba’s death he had no known history of mental illness, alcohol abuse, or illicit drug use.

The CDC Warns Of Consuming Edible Marijuana After Death of Teenage BoyThamba’s autopsy discovered that the 19-year-old had 7.2 nanograms of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) per milliliter of blood in his system. THC is the ingredient in marijuana which induces the effects of feeling high. Thamba’s THC levels were well over the 5.0ng/mL legal limit for driving in Colorado.

The psychoactive effects of marijuana when eaten in edible form can be difficult to recognize due to the product slowly absorbing into one’s bloodstream, versus with smoking. When smoked, peak THC concentration levels are reached within five to ten minutes, on the other hand when ingested the THC concentration doesn’t peak until one to two hours. In addition, individuals who consume edible marijuana products are intoxicated longer than those who smoke the drug. Therefore, it is very important for those who ingest edible marijuana products recreationally to have the accurate dose levels.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a statement expressing their concern over the dangers of edible marijuana products,

“Because of the delayed effects of THC-infused edibles, multiple servings might be consumed in close succession before experiencing the ‘high’ from the initial serving, as reportedly occurred in this case,” says the CDC. “Consuming a large dose of THC can result in a higher THC concentration, greater intoxication, and an increased risk for adverse psychological effects,”

quotes Medical News Today.

The CDC also suggests that this case may be an indicator that there’s a need for improvement in public health messaging as a means to reduce the risk for over-consumption of THC. They have also recommended that other states which allow the use of recreational marijuana could possibly reduce adverse health effects by adopting policies similar to the ones brought about by Colorado this year.

In February of this year, Colorado created revisions in their packaging, as well as labeling rules for recreational marijuana after reviewing surveillance data and reports of accidental over consumption of edible marijuana products. The revised rules now require recreational edible marijuana products not to exceed no more than 10mg of THC or have each 10 mg serving marked clearly.

Improving Your Working Memory Is the Key to Avoiding Drug and Alcohol Addiction

If you want to know how to stop kids from even experimenting with drugs and alcohol, you may be surprised to learn simple testing and subsequent intervention from a young age may be just the thing- but it’s not quite what you think. According to ProjectKnow, having a strong working memory is the key to avoiding a life riddled with addiction. In a study conducted by the Department of Counseling Psychology at the University of Oregon, researchers discovered the connection between one’s predisposition to abuse if their working memory was impaired or in anyway inhibited. The reason being?

Those with weakened working memories are more prone to engage in potentially dangerous and impulsive behavior- which can translate into saying “Yes” when offered a hit.

The researchers assert with heightened, “greater executive attention” we are less likely to be influenced by our environments which may be harmful, and rely more on our own abilities of- drumroll please- logic!

No, maybe I shouldn’t get in the shopping cart that’s tied to my friend’s car.

In our case, imposing logic would be the abnegation of experimenting with drugs, regardless if everyone else is doing it. But it’s okay, there’s hope for those who were born with a weakened working memory. In childhood, research has proven intervening early, after preliminary memory tests, may be able to increase working memory with cognitive stimulation, unending support, and a warm family environment.

Taking a more active approach, engaging children with games stimulating the development of social skills and enhancing their problem solving abilities can make a difference in terms of strengthening their working memory, and eventually dissuading children from experimenting with drugs and alcohol.

But what can you do if you’re not a child? One would imagine engaging in the same stimulation on par for whatever age group in question would produce similar, if not the same, effects. A few weeks ago we wrote about how reading and increased cognition can prevent addiction.

Get in the action and learn how to improve your working memory! Start with a quick google search.

Study Suggests Brain Scans Could Show Risk Levels for Alcohol Abuse

According to a research team from Duke University, a young adult’s susceptibility for alcohol abuse or engaging in risky sexual behaviors can be detected using brain scans.

The team of researchers aimed to understand communication between the brain, genome, and environment that are the basis for engagement in risky behaviors  predicting mental illness including depression, anxiety, and addiction. “By knowing the biology that predicts risk, we hope to eventually change the biology — or at least meet that biology with other forces to stem the risk,” says senior author Ahmad Hariri, Duke professor of psychology and neuroscience, as quoted by CTV News.

The team used non-invasive functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to observe the ventral striatum, the area of the brain which seeks reward, and the amygdala, the area that weighs the consequences of risks.

Study Suggests That Brain Scans Could Show Risk Levels For Alcohol Abuse The team used data from the scans of 200 participants and 759 students whose average age was 19, from the data researchers determined that an overcharged ventral striatum in combination with a lazy amygdala is a recipe for problem drinking. Researchers also found that having an underactive ventral striatum and a turbo-charged amygdala was also an indicator of problem drinking, according to the study.

According to Hariri, if there’s high activity in both areas or low activity in both areas there’s no problem, however when the two are not in sync it could incite a drinking problem. Hariri also added that the underlying causes of a drinking problem could vary in both instances.

Alcohol abuse has the ability to stem impulsively from a hyperactive ventral striatum, and when combined with a low-energy amygdala, it could cause the individual to be less likely to curb their behavior. However, a ventral striatum with low demands for reward could make an individual feel as if their life is depressing, and a hyperactive amygdala could make the individual extremely sensitive to stress which could result in drinking alcohol as a coping mechanism

According to a separate study, the equilibrium or lack thereof between the amygdala and the ventral striatum could also indicate sexual behaviors. In the study, researchers worked with a sample of to heterosexual male and female participants, surveying them for their number of sexual partners acquired over a time period of 11 months. The study found that men who had had a highly active ventral striatum and a low activity amygdala had more sexual partners than those who had a balanced brain. On the other hand, women who were more promiscuous had high levels of activity in both regions, which indicated that an inclination for seeking thrills and sensitivity to threat which go hand in hand. “It’s not really clear why that is. One possibility is that this amygdala signal is representing different things in men and women,” says Hariri.

Coping With Drug and Alcohol Cravings

Coping With Drug And Alcohol Cravings

When a craving hits, it’s hard to ignore and the temptation to use again can skyrocket. Dealing with a craving is one of the biggest hurdles faced by someone who is recovering from their addiction. However, with enough relapse prevention care, one can move on from the cravings and lead a long-term, sober, healthy lifestyle.

During recovery, cravings are normal, and every person struggling with their addiction should learn to address and stop the intense sensation before it leads to relapse. Identifying what triggers a craving, removing these triggers, and understanding what a craving can feel like for someone in recovery is key to helping you or a loved one with after-rehab treatment.

What You Should Know About Cravings

Cravings for someone in treatment can peak around six months after sobriety begins, so it’s a good idea to have a plan in place, well in advance, before these cravings start or get out of control. After the initial six months, the need to use again begins to decrease in intensity. A counselor can help by developing a course of action and treatment plan should a craving come up.

When we crave something, it can range from wanting certain junk foods to shopping; the sensation of a craving seems ominous until the urge has been fulfilled, either by chowing down on a big cheeseburger or spending too much at the mall. Usually, we regret giving in to temptation and vow to not do it again. For someone in recovery, cravings for alcohol or drugs are more than just fleeting temptations, but also somatic and much harder to resist.

According to Psychology Today, cravings are an act of the brain re-experiencing memories of drug and alcohol abuse. When an addict remembers, parts of the brain that are associated with sounds, sights, smells, and thoughts are heightened in a way that’s very similar to the initial experience of actually using the substance, and the need for the substances’ effects increase.

What Does A Craving Feel Like?

It’s difficult to describe what a craving feels like, especially if you’ve never experienced it yourself. On several online forums, former addicts describe cravings as more of an obsession or a compulsion, and the physical tension is feeling like you’re a tightly wound spring or a rubber band that’s been stretched too far, ready to snap. The senses seem narrower, and the brain loops memories of drug and alcohol usage. One even compared the feeling of a craving to holding their breath until the craving has been satisfied.

For some users, cravings are like persuasive nudges from the back of their mind: “I could really go for this right now…” or, “It’s my last time, I swear!” or even, “No one has to know…”, and for others, a craving comes vividly in their dreams where they can see, smell and even taste the substance they were using. Cravings are a deep yearning, disguising itself as a need rather than a want; users feel like their lives depend on that one particular substance to help get over what stresses them out the most.

Giving in to a craving sometimes results from wanting to get over the harsh effects of withdrawal, which can include irritability, emotional instability, anxiety, depression, restlessness, sweating/hot flashes, appetite changes, flu-like symptoms (weakness, body aches, and headaches), and increased sensitivity to pain.

Resisting The Cravings

Some may find themselves in situations where drugs or alcohol use take place, such as a bar or club, a party, or social events. Sometimes their cravings sneak up on them when they’re least expecting it, like watching TV or having flashbacks to when they were using. There’s a four step method called DEADS, which is part of the SMART Recovery 4-Point Program, a non-12-Step approach that many individuals find beneficial to their overall well-being. The DEADS method is to be completed in the following order:

  • D – Delay Using
When a craving has not gone away in several minutes, the temptation is still present.
  • E – Escape
Leave the situation, whether it’s the bar or a party, or even switching channels on the TV. Leaving the scene where temptation strikes helps alleviate the pull of using again.
  • A – Accept
Acknowledge that you’re having a craving and move on; don’t dwell on it.
  • D – Dispute
Eliminate the craving through a rational response. Think about how you’ll feel the next day to get an idea of how the aftermath of a craving will be.
  • S – Substitute
Replace the craving with something else, such as a brisk walk, a creative activity (painting, jewelry making), run an errand or two, or even leave the room; a change in your environment makes a significant difference.

If the craving is still lingering after completing the DEADS method, go home or remove yourself from the environment, or find a supportive family member or friend to talk to. You could also call your counselor, distract yourself with a movie, or spend some time with an interesting book at the bookstore. Group sessions or having a sponsor to talk to are also a great way to get your mind off a craving. No matter what you decide to do, distracting yourself with a fun, sober activity can help tremendously.

Marijuana May Help Treat Opiate Withdrawal

Fighting drug addiction with more drugs seems odd to say the least, especially with a drug that is still considered illegal on a federal level. A new study conducted by Columbia University may have found a correlation between marijuana abating the adverse symptoms of withdrawal for recovering opiate addicts, according to SF Gate. (I guess we’re starting to really take the potential of medicinal marijuana to the next level.) In an experimental group of 60 physically dependent on opiates, who were admitted to an eight week recovery program, 32 percent of recovering users where administered a form of THC, called dronabinol, in the midst of treatment.

Of those who were administered dronabinol, researchers observed a drastic decrease in the excruciating symptoms of withdrawal; researchers found those treated with THC were more likely to complete the entirety of the program. Perhaps this also means THC may reduce the rates of relapse in the long run- although no official claims have been asserted by the researchers of Columbia University in regards to relapse.

SF Gate quotes the researchers of the study,

“Participants who smoked marijuana regularly during the outpatient phase had significantly lower ratings of insomnia and anxiety and were more likely to complete the eight week trial,”

Now wait a minute- this doesn’t mean you should attempt to overcome your own addiction by smoking marijuana. If we know anything about medically assisted drug treatment it’s that the medications prescribed to those overcoming addiction do not produce the high ascribed to addictive substances found on the street. Typically maintenance drugs only satisfy the latent biological necessities of the addictive substance in question.

For instance, those taking suboxone for heroin addiction will not get high off of suboxone, but the drug does allow their bodies to have the necessary opiate for normal functioning without being floored into withdrawal.

So what does this mean for the potential of marijuana maintenance therapy (also called medically assisted drug treatment)? It’s too soon to tell, but more research into marijuana as a means of abating the symptoms of withdrawal may be one of the deciding factors in tipping the illegal threshold of the drug in question- as if it is used to combat addiction, and not add to those who become addicted to the substance, its merit as a medical boon in the addiction industry will be irrefutable.

Conversely, 17 percent of marijuana users become addicted to the substance, and may require drug rehabilitation to overcome their addiction. The question then remains, should we again, as an industry, introduce another substance to treat addiction, when it itself is addictive?

What do you think about using marijuana as a means to fight addiction?

Music Icon Whitney Houston’s Daughter, Bobbi Kristina, Has Passed At Age 22

According to reports from Yahoo News, Bobbi Kristina Brown, daughter to music superstars Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown, has passed at the tender age of 22. Brown was found in the bathtub of her home unconscious just six months ago and died at a hospice in Duluth, Georgia over the weekend.

The 22-year old suffered from a drug use problem following the death of her mother on February 12, 2012. Sources claim her death was linked to a drug overdose, which paralleled the death of her late mother in 2012. Houston was found in a Los Angeles hotel facedown in a bathtub from an apparent drug overdose. According to reports, Bobbi Kristina was unresponsive in her Atlanta, Georgia residence on January 31. Emergency crews were able to revive the 22-year-old , however she suffered significant brain damage, which resulted in her being placed into a medically induced coma.

The circumstances linked to Bobbi Kristina being found in the bathtub of her home unconscious were very similar to her mother’s, according to a final coroner’s report. Houston may have overdosed on drugs and alcohol leading up to her death, drug-related heart damage was also attributed as playing a role in her death. Back in February the media reported that police suspected Bobbi Kristina’s boyfriend, Nick Gordon, who claimed to have found Bobbi Kristina, may have played a role in her death.

According to reports Bobbi Kristina incurred unexplained injuries before she was found in the bathtub unresponsive, although there are claims of drug overdose, no criminal charges have been brought about.

Bobbi Kristina’s family developed a fear over her long-term health after she was transferred to the hospice in Duluth in June.  “Despite the great medical care at numerous facilities, her condition has continued to deteriorate,” said Bobbi Kristina’s aunt in a statement during the time of the transition into hospice care, as quoted by Yahoo News.

Upon Bobbi Kristina’s death her family issued a statement, “She is finally at peace in the arms of God. We want to again thank everyone for their tremendous amount of love and support during these last few months.” The family also shared that Bobbi Kristina was surrounded by family and love in the days leading up to her death.

Trading One Addiction For Another: Do Drug Rehab Centers Put Patients On Prescription Drugs?

Trading One Addiction For Another

People who have fallen victim to substance dependency often turn to drug rehabilitation centers and replacement therapy as a way to beat their problem. However, drug replacement therapy is something of a controversial treatment with two basic sides: people who think it helps ease symptoms of withdrawal and people who think it just trades one addiction for another.

Drug Replacement Therapy

People undergoing drug replacement therapy are prescribed a medication which simulates the substance from which they suffer dependency. It is prescribed by a doctor and can be distributed in two ways: inpatient or outpatient procedures.

Inpatient drug replacement therapy requires staying at the facility while outpatient therapy lets the patient return home. Replacement medicines can be picked up at rehabilitation centers across the country.

These replacement medicines are at lower and cleaner doses than the drugs they are replacing. It’s important to remember that drug replacement therapy is not considered a “cure” for dependency. Instead, it is used as a “maintenance” therapy for long-term sufferers. It helps give them access to a safer and legal substance, one with a dose that can be gradually lowered to decrease and even eliminate dependency.

The use of drug replacement therapy to treat people suffering from dependency has been studied for over 40 years and has been approved by a variety of health-oriented groups, including the:

  • Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
  • Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration
  • National Institute on Drug Abuse
  • World Health Organization
  • Institute of Medicine

Medicines Used

When victims of substance dependency enter rehabilitation, they are prescribed a medicine most suitable for their substance. For example, those who are dependent on opiates (such as heroin, morphine, and painkillers) are often given medicines such as clonidine, buphrenophine, or methadone.

Alcohol dependency is usually treated with medicines like Valium, Ativan, Librium, or phenobarbitals while stimulant dependency (such as cocaine and methamphetamine) requires treatment with benzodiazepine, Norpramin, Diazepam, or certain antidepressants.

These medicines will be carefully monitored, distributed, and controlled by medical experts. The major advantage of these medicines is that victims of dependency won’t have access to an unlimited supply of them, especially if they stay right on the premises of the rehabilitation facility. This helps their rehabilitation expert or doctor monitor their dependency and help slowly detox and treat their patients.

The Addictiveness Of These Medicines

The unfortunate truth is that just about every substance (from methadone to benzodiazepine) used to treat dependency can create dependency. This is because they stimulate the same areas of the brain that cause dependency to form in the first place.

Critics of replacement therapy point out that keeping people dependent on a substance is counter-intuitive, especially in instances when used in an outpatient therapy. Outpatient treatment is harder to monitor and control, as patients can simply pick up their medicine and go home. Without a medical expert monitoring their intake, there’s no way to ensure their dependency will get properly treated.

Dangers Of Cold Turkey

Sometimes, a person dependent on a substance will choose to forgo replacement therapy and try to quit with no replacement medicines i.e. going “cold turkey”. While this may sometimes work, it is generally not a wise decision nor recommended. People with serious abuse problems often suffer from very severe withdrawal symptoms when they try quitting cold turkey.

Some of these symptoms include:

  • Severe head pain
  • Anxiousness
  • Poor focus
  • Tremors
  • Sickness
  • Pounding heart
  • Vomiting

Other more severe symptoms include grand mal seizures, strokes, hallucinations, and heart attacks. These symptoms are actually more common with alcohol and tranquilizer withdrawal, though they can occur in conjunction with any drug withdrawal.

The Final Verdict

While it may seem scary to treat a substance reliance with another potential problematic substance, it is often the only way drug rehabilitation can help. Until the day an absolute dependency cure can be found, drug replacement therapy is still the best option to help people suffering from substance abuse issues from continuing with their problematic behaviors or suffering from dangerous and potentially deadly withdrawal symptoms.

Khloe Kardashian & Kylie Jenner: Cocaine, Jello Shots, and Speculation Abound!

Khloe Kardashian & Kylie Jenner: Cocaine, Jello Shots, and Speculation Abound!

Khloe Kardashian by Lolo9878 licensed under CC By 4.0

Just when you thought the Kardashian clan was settling down after speculation of Kylie Jenner’s Xanax addiction has recently been abated, new snapchat camera footage may show the consumption of cocaine by an eager party-goer watching Khole shake the Kardashian’s famous derriere (some might call it twerking) during Kylie Jenner’s high school graduation extravaganza, according to the Inquisitr. The celebration was videographed by professional cameraman, for use in later segments with Keeping Up with the Kardashians, but how will fans respond to rumors of cocaine use?

Khloe took to her infamous twitter account to respond to the slanderous accusations, stating the eager spectator was loosening a jello shot to plop into his mouth.

You guys will make up anything. No! No one was doing coke at a graduation party in broad day light with teenagers and 15 production

— Khloé (@khloekardashian) July 25, 2015

cameras! We aren’t as wild as you want to believe. We were taking Jell-O shots though and you have

— Khloé (@khloekardashian) July 25, 2015

To scrap the rim of the shot glass w ur finger to loosen up the jello in order 2 take it. Just say no to drugs kids! Drugs so not our style

— Khloé (@khloekardashian) July 25, 2015

In typical Twitter style, commenters flocked to reprimand the Kardashian’s sanction of Kylie Jenner’s relationship with a man who is very much her senior- but seem to believe Khole’s disavowal of cocaine use during the party. Or at least, from what I was able to force myself to read, there were virtually no comments at all addressing the cocaine allegation.

Kylizzlessnapchats uploaded a video of Khole K touting a large tray of what appears to be jello shots Perhaps the rumor of cocaine use is more gripping than the reality of what really happened- but does that justify the potentially harmful accusations of the going-ons of Kardashian house parties? We don’t think so.

Can we just stop for one minute and consider how these harmful rumors will affect Kylie Jenner? It was her graduation party after all.

In the words of Khloe, “Just say no to drugs kids!”

Can I Have A Paleo Diet While In Drug Rehab?

Can I Have a Paleo Diet While in Drug Rehab

The paleo diet is one in a long line of fad diets that has captured the imagination of the country. Its supporters are posting wild lists of benefits across the internet that seem almost too good to be true. Is such a severe diet a good idea for you during the delicate and difficult drug rehabilitation process?

What Is The Paleo Diet?

The paleo diet is a variation of the “high protein and low carbohydrate” diets that have been sweeping the nation. The creators of the paleo diet operate under a variety of unique assumptions about how the human digestive system works. Essentially, they believe that since we were hunters and gatherers for a majority of our existence, the human digestive system is adapted specifically to these foods. In fact, they argue that the grains and legumes that have become our main source of food since the dawn of agriculture are slowly killing us by causing problems as diverse as obesity, diabetes, depression, anxiety, and even Alzheimer’s disease.

Foods you can eat on the paleo diet include:

  • Meat
  • Fish
  • Fruits
  • Vegetables
  • Nuts
  • Eggs

And that’s it: anything else, including potatoes, grains, dairy, and processed food, are off-limits.

What Happens When You Get On The Paleo Diet?

Proponents of this diet state that it will help you beat what they say is an “addiction” to carbohydrates. The language is more appropriate than they realize, as wildly cutting carbs from your diet can trigger a side effects that emulate drug withdrawal.

That’s right: carbohydrate elimination throws your body into a health tailspin that isn’t suitable for someone in a drug rehabilitation program. These side effects are often painful and include:

  • Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Spinning head
  • Diarrhea
  • Low energy levels
  • Migraines
  • Cramps
  • Difficult to avoid cravings

The latter side effect is particularly problematic if you are suffering through drug cravings in rehab: eliminating the desire to use is a big part of succeeding in rehab and adding carb cravings will only add more difficulty to your recovery process.

What Do The Experts Say?

While there may be some truth to the benefits of the paleo diet, they are outweighed by the negatives while you are recovering from addiction. Nearly all drug rehabilitation experts, such as the Southern Illinois School of Medicine, agree that a diet balanced between proteins and carbohydrates is vital to recovery.

Getting that balance with a paleo diet will be nearly impossible and won’t help your body recover from the malnourishment many people recovering from addiction suffer. As a matter of fact, these nutritional deficiencies will only be compounded by an unbalanced diet. Simply put, the vitamins and nutrients you need to recover simply won’t be available in the foods suggested by the paleo diet. A typical recovery diet should include lean meats, fatty fish, healthy nuts, whole grain foods, beans, fresh fruits, and vegetables. These foods will help eliminate malnourishment, speed up your recovery, and help you feel healthier every day.

Increasing your overall nutritional health is one of the most important aspects of your recovery process. Feeling the sickness and depression that comes with malnutrition may cause you to relapse: however, a well-balanced diet and improved feelings of overall health will make relapse less likely.

Can I Start A Paleo Diet After Rehab?

If you are interested in starting a paleo diet after finishing rehabilitation, make sure to wait until after your cravings have disappeared. Also make sure to get tested for malnutrition to see how well your balanced diet has helped your body recover.

Once your cravings have disappeared and your body is at a safe nutritional level, you can start slowly phasing carbs out of your diet. Eliminate one carb a week from your diet and replace it with a protein.
This process may seem frustratingly slow, but it is important to help you avoid potential relapses. Even carbohydrate cravings and withdrawal symptoms can interfere with your recovery process.

While the paleo diet may offer you some health benefits, its side effects make it more trouble than it is worth. As E-Gaming Becomes More Popular, Rules Are Getting Tighter and E-Gamers Will Start Being Drug Tested

As E-Gaming Becomes More Popular, Rules Are Getting Tighter and E-Gamers Will Start Being Drug TestedRules for performance enhancing drugs have been set in place for many sports, however the rules are now being enforced for competitive video game players. The new rule is in response to competitive video gamer Kory Friesen boasting about him and his teammates consuming prescription drugs to enhance their focus during competitions, according to New York Times

As a result of Friesen’s boasting, the Electronic Sports League (E.S.L) shared on Wednesday that they will begin to test players for use of performance enhancing drugs starting with a tournament in August. E.S.L. revealed that they will collaborate with two international agencies, National Anti-Doping Agency of Germany to assist in developing a new policy, and the World Anti-Doping Agency to assit in enforcing the policy.

E.S.L. has had a long standing prohibition against doping, however the rules have never specified which drugs were prohibited, and the league failed to police competitive players. However, E.S.L. tightened up the rules after Friesen, who plays under the name Semphis shared in an interview earlier this month that he used Adderall during an E.S.L. tournament. In an interview posted to Youtube, Friesen also revealed that his teammates used Adderall as well, a drug which is primarily prescribed to those with ADHD, however the drug is commonly abused to help its user enhance their focus.

the E.S.L. faces unique challenges in drug testing it’s players due to some preliminary competitions being held online and players are scattered all around the country and abroad, meaning no one except maybe a housemate will see the player popping a pill.

“We want to create a level playing field for all competitors and maintain the integrity of the sport,” said James Lampkin, vice president of professional gaming at E.S.L. Lampkin also shared that they will work with both agencies to determine the how well current testing methods will detect drug use. It has been suggested by Lampkin that the whole industry may have to switch from online competitions to majority live, in-person games, according to New York Times.

The announcement is a possible indicator that e-sports is evolving into a mainstream form of competitive entertainment. Despite competitive gaming being around for over a decade, it has gained popularity as a serious business within the past few years. Live events can attract up to tens of thousands of people and online competitions have millions of viewers. Energy drink companies have even began marketing products for gamers, suggesting their products are capable of improving play.

Do you believe that we will see a difference in competitive gamers performance now that they’re being drug tested?

Stranger Lets Himself into Apartment and Waits ‘Paranormal Activity’ Style Beside Clueless Homeowner’s Bed in Search of His Drug Dealer

South Florida has produced some strange drug stories- and some of them which don’t involve bodily injury or permanent damage are amusing- but I think this bizarre account in West Palm Beach takes the cake. Police arrested Colin McGarrigle (26) for burglary, theft, and marijuana possession after a terrified homeowner called 911 waking up to McGarrigle standing in his bedroom waiting for him to wake up- but it’s okay!

McGarrigle was just looking for his drug dealer, according to The Sun Sentinel.

A surprisingly mellow McGarrigle told police the incident was a “simple misunderstanding,” and that he merely let himself into the apartment after his drug dealer disappeared inside to sell him marijuana. Growing tired of waiting (in the hallway?), McGarrigle thought it only fair to catch a cat nap on the couch. But alas, when we awoke, still no drug dealer, who McGarrigle has dubbed “Rob.”

In a desperate search for his dope man, McGarrigle searched the home, but only found the sleeping homeowner and his son, who were soundly sleeping. So he did the only rational thing he could think: he stood beside the bed of the sleeping homeowner, Paranormal Activity Style, until he eventually woke up, to probably say something along the lines of,

“Excuse me sir, have you seen my drug dealer?”

Suffice it to say, our clueless homeowner was none too thrilled about his seemingly harmless intruder- especially after discovering $300 from his apartment was no where to be found, and that his apartment was ransacked- oh and one of his window screens was dismantled. But surely, it was a “simple misunderstanding.”

Hide your kids, your wives, and your window screens!

Do you have any strange drug related tales to regale us with?

Drug Rehab at Gateway Can Involve Medication Assisted Treatment

Expert Insight from Gilbert Lichstein, Program Director, Gateway Chicago West

3 in a Series of 4

Gateway Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers employs evidenced-based practices to create meaningful, individualized treatment programs. We believe there is more than one pathway to recovery so we expose clients to a wide array of treatment methodologies. This series explores some of those methodologies.

Medication Assisted Treatment

drug rehab, medication assisted treatment, substance abuse treatemnt, gateway treatment centersGateways’ comprehensive alcohol and drug rehab programs incorporate the ability to provide medication assisted treatment (MAT). MAT can be a valuable tool for effectively decreasing withdrawal symptoms, reducing or eliminating cravings, assisting with detoxification, and reducing the risk of relapse.

Freedom from withdrawal symptoms enables people to begin therapy sooner than later. With their cravings under control, individuals can more easily engage in their alcohol or drug rehab program and are more likely to stay in treatment. Gateway offers medication assisted treatment in both outpatient drug treatment and inpatient treatment programs.

The medications used by Gateway are closely monitored and, the way we use them, are not addictive. Options are available to alleviate various aspects of dependency on opiates, alcohol, benzodiazepine or other substances. We administer the minimum effective dose and discontinue the use of medications as soon as possible.

As with all Gateway methodologies, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to medication assisted treatment. Clients are individually assessed for the suitability and advisability of using MAT and not all are candidates. We discuss the options with those who are candidates and work closely with them to develop a personalized treatment plan. People are always free to decline the option to use medications.

Gateway’s cutting edge use of new medications and evidence-based programming sets us apart from the norm. What we are doing is measurable, and with doctors and psychiatrists on board, our treatment has evolved into a medical model.

Is someone you know is struggling with alcohol or drug use? Gateway Can Help. Don’t wait, call 800-971-HOPE (4673) or visit RecoverGateway.org today.

Researchers Discover Link Between Addiction and Lack of Stimulation

Researchers Discover Link Between Addiction and Lack of StimulationA group of researchers at UC Berkeley found a correlation between lack of mental stimulation as a catalyst for developing a drug addiction. The study analyzed the effects of cocaine of intellectually stimulated mice, according to The Daily Californian.

UCSF neuroscience doctoral student and lead author of the paper, Josiah Boivin, shared that in the study researchers training one group of mice on how to perform a series of stimulating tasks, for example searching for cereal in wood shavings using scent and texture. Another control group of mice remained in their home cage with no access to cereal or training, and a final group of mice were fed cereal in the training areas without being apart of the challenges.

After staying in the somewhat deprived conditions of their cages for four weeks, Boivin says the mice were then injected with cocaine in a “distinctive chamber” and injected with saline in a different chamber. Upon the sample of mice being provided the opportunity to decide which chamber to return to, the group of mice that were trained were less likely to return to the chamber where they were injected with  cocaine than the mice that did not have a history of mental stimulation.

According to Boivin, the researchers measured for drug-seeking behavior by the mice’s preference to choose to return to the cocaine chamber.

A big problem surrounding the issue of drug use is the high susceptibility for relapse. When individuals return to the location where they had their first encounter with the drug or a place where they often used the drug, the likelihood of relapse was high, according to Stephan Lammel. campus assistant professor of neurobiology.

“Our results suggest that relatively brief interventions in young adulthood can have a long-term impact on the brain’s response to future drug exposure,” Boivin stated in an email. Boivin also added that studies which use animal models are resourceful for developing ways to build resilience against addiction in those who have a higher susceptibility for developing a substance abuse disorder.

According to Lammel, the next possible step could work towards finding out where the cognitive feedback is taking place in the brain, which could lead to the possibility of finding medical devices to target those specific areas.

Do you think with further research will lead to the development of new ways to combat against addiction?

+1 for the Kardashian Family? Khloe Kardashian Pregnant with Recovering Addict Lamar Odom

The Kardashian clan is reminding me more and more of a drama filled Brady Bunch; Khloe Kardashian has announced after years of attempting to get pregnant, an amorous reconciliation with her soon-to-be ex husband, Lamar Odom, turned out to be the blessing she’s been wishing for: a baby! According to the International Business Times Khloe Kardashian and Lamar Odom couldn’t be more thrilled about starting their own sect of the Kardashian cult. Sadly, not everything is rainbows and unicorns. Although Lamar has vowed to “stay on the straight and narrow,” according to the IB Times, can Khloe be certain his old addictive habits won’t creep back up again?

In 2012 Lamar Odom, an NBA star, willingly went to drug rehab to get a handle on his addiction- which allegedly included cocaine before his marriage to Khole fell apart. Unfortunately, Lamar relapsed and fell back into his old habit, which he in part attributes to his genetic disposition for the disease of addiction, on account of addiction running rife in his immediate family. Although one’s genetic history plays a large role in addiction, with proper counseling, and the expansion of life skills, despite one’s genetic penchants for being susceptible for addiction, many make full recoveries in spite of their “addiction handicaps.”

No excuses, Lamar!

We have every hope Lamar will be able to abstain from descending into the spiral of addiction, especially with a little one on the way. But even in the event he does, if anyone has a killer support system, it’s him- and that’s one of the most important aspects of overcoming a substance use disorder.

Which navigational direction do you think Khole will name her little tyke when the time comes?

Aerospace Engineers by Day, Drug Dealers by Night: Marijuana Selfie & Prison Bars

It seems to be a growing fad of care-free drug dealers, or drug users, posting their illicit activities publicly onto their social media accounts. The practice has become so common police officers comb through social media frequently to bust offenders quickly, and without much police work- which is exactly what happened to Richard Edmunds and Joshua Langmead. The dynamic duo shared a living space in South Molton, in the UK and were actively engaged in maintaining a large scale indoor greenhouse for marijuana in two separate bedrooms. What gave it all away? Weed selfie!

Langmead manned the camera which ultimately got him and his co-conspirator jailed for eight and 20 months respectively. Both men worked for an aerospace firm by day and sold marijuana at night and on their off time. Police officers found evidence of illicit sales on six different cell phones including text messages of deals, and pictures of marijuana plants in various stages of growth, according to the Bath Chronicle.

In addition to the slew of pot charges, including manufacturing, possession, and distributing a controlled substance, Edmunds admitted to having a stash of ecstasy for his own personal use. The two assert their marijuana growery was the product of supporting their own marijuana habit. Both social media sensations have been slapped with mandatory unpaid community service hours upwards of 150 hours each.

Police officers were surprised both Edmunds and Langmead received sparkling accolades from their employer.

Could there be more to the story we don’t know?

Research Has Discovered Drinking Alcohol Can Raise Blood Pressure In Women

According to Australian researchers, consuming two drinks daily could cause a woman’s blood pressure to rise high enough to increase her susceptibility for developing hypertension.

Previously conducted studies have shown that consuming alcohol can raise a man’s blood pressure, however study results for women have always shown mixed results. In a recently conducted study, researchers found that when women consumed 14 to 21 standard servings of red wine weekly, their results showed higher blood pressure versus when they consumed less alcohol or consumed non alcoholic wine.

“If (women) are not drinking within national guidelines when drinking [no more than seven drinks in a week and three on any day] they should cut down, switch to nonalcoholic drinks after reaching this level. It is worth paying attention to the long-term effects of higher blood pressure levels because hypertension is the most common cause of heart disease,”

stated Dr. Barbara J. Turner, director of the Research to Advance Community Health (ReACH) Center at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio, as quoted by the Duluth Tribune News.

For the study, a team of researchers at the University of Western Australia recruited 24 healthy women as a means to test for the effects of varying amounts of alcohol on 24-hour blood pressure. The women ranged in age from 24 to 49, and the majority of the sample of women were wine drinkers. Researchers measured the particResearch Has Discovered That Drinking Alcohol Can Raise Blood Pressure In Women ipant’s’ normal blood pressure before the start of the study. The women were then divided into two groups based on their reports of their typical level of drinking; one group for higher-level drinkers and the second for lower-level drinkers.

During the study the women went through three month-long trials. In the first month, the women had been instructed to consume a higher volume of Shiraz Cabernet wine nightly for a week, which equates to about 6 ounces or two glasses nightly for the lower-level drinkers, and 10 ounces or three glasses nightly for the higher-level drinkers. In the second month, the participants consumed a smaller amount of the same red wine daily, with the lower-level drinkers consuming one glass per night, four times a week and higher-level drinkers consuming one glass of wine daily every night of the week.

In the last four-week period of the study, the women consumed the same amount of drinks as they did during the higher-volume month, however they drank dealcoholized red wine for this period. The women did not consume any alcohol during any other period during the day.

Nurses monitored each participant’s blood pressure every 30-minutes within a 24-hour time span, at the end of each month. The participants also completed diet and physical activity logs at the end of each study period, in addition to providing blood samples in order to measure whether they were in compliance of changing their alcohol intake.

According to the study, before the study started the women had an average blood pressure reading of 110 mmHg and 69 mmHg diastolic blood pressure. After the higher-volume phase, the participants systolic blood pressure increased by about 2 mmHG and their diastolic readings were 1.2 mmHg higher after the dealcoholized wine period. However, blood pressure readings were in close range during the lower-volume red wine month and the dealcoholized red wine month. According to reports, blood pressure differences were more noticeable during the day versus when the participants were sleeping.

Researchers concluded that consuming two to three glasses of red wine daily does increase the blood pressure of women who are healthy and pre-menopausal, this effect is similar to that which had been previously found in men.

Recent Study Reveals That Global Alcohol Abuse Rates Are Down, However US Alcohol Abuse Rates Are Up

According to the Global Burden of Disease Study, global alcohol abuse rates are down by 7.6 percent since 1990, however the United States has seen a 5.5 percent increase within that same period of time.

Research found that in the year 2013, 78.6 people worldwide were diagnosed with an Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD)- which is a higher figure than the population of over 200 countries, including the
United Kingdom. Out of those 78.6 million people, 5.1 million individuals were residents of the United States.

In addition to the 5.5 percent increase in alcohol abuse in the United States, the study discovered a greater percentage of Americans abused opioids and amphetamines as well over the past 25 years. As a result, opioid use disorders have increased by 5.7 percent in the United States, a little less than the 6.4 percent increase which has been reported globally. However, as amphetamine use disorders decreased by 4.1 percent worldwide, the United States saw a reported 3 percent increase.

Despite increases in alcohol, amphetamine, and opioid use disorders, cocaine and cannabis use disorders are down globally and in the United States. According to the study, cocaine use disorders decreased by 4.2 percent in the United States and a greater decline was seen globally, with a reported 5.9 percent decline.

Since 1990, cannabis use disorders are down by 6.5 percent globally and by .8 percent in the United States, these findings have been deemed statistically insignificant, according to the study’s results.

University of Washington professor and lead study author, Theo Vos shared with  CNS News that the reported declines in substance abuse are modest and in addition little progress has been made to prevent alcohol and drug abuse in the U.S. and around the world. “At the global level the decline in alcohol use disorders is small, though ‘significant statistically. There is a small increase in opioid dependence. The changes in the other drug use disorders are smaller and not significant,” said Vos to CNS News.

Vos added he believes funding to help prevent substance abuse is “crowding out” research in other public health areas.

Do you agree with Voss that funding for substance abuse prevention is crowding out other research areas or is the funding for substance abuse prevention justified?

Preliminary Research from Beijing Links Erectile Dysfunction with Illicit “Party Drug” Use

Sorry guys, if you’re using popular club drugs to get you in the mood, you may actually be doing the exact opposite thing you’re trying to achieve. I know, it sucks. A recent study released by the journal of Sexual Medicine published preliminary results from a study which analyzed the habits of 1,159 males who engaged in illicit drug activities which are commonly found on the club scene. The study zeroed in on stimulants, or amphetamines, including ecstasy. The Siasat Daily quotes lead researcher, Bang-Ping Jiann,

“Compared with 211 matched controls, amphetamine users were twice as likely to experience erectile dysfunction,”

And it doesn’t just stop there, unfortunately. Men who actively took party drugs during the study reported “reduced erectile rigidity” and diminished sexual fulfillment, according to The Siasat Daily. So what does this all mean? Why do the drugs which induce immediate feelings of euphoria and universal love have the exact opposite effect when guys take club drugs to “get in the mood?”

It’s simple! We have no idea. These preliminary findings are not conclusive enough to make any reliable blanket statements. Others who participated in the study reported having increased libido, spontaneous erections, and difficulty ejaculating. That last bit don’t sound pleasing, to say the least.

It’s too soon to make a grand judgement on the study because those who participated in initial research groups reported a wide spectrum of both positive and negative effects. The Medical Daily says,

“The participants’ frequency of use had some association with its impact on sexual function, while duration of use did not. Those participants who used most frequently were most likely to report an increase in positive sexual function  rather than negative.”

Before you break out MDMA in a laughable attempt to mirror the positive effects reported in this study, why don’t you wait until research is more conclusive? Try grabbing a candle and soft music, that always does the trick.

On a more serious note, amphetamines and club drugs have an exceedingly high rate of addiction potential, and pose a serious threat to the health of those who partake in their use. Extended abuse of stimulant drugs include:

  • Chronic Paranoia
  • Anxiety
  • Memory Loss
  • Permanent Brain Damage

If panic attacks without a history of them doesn’t phase you, consider that ecstasy was the culprit for 22,498 hospitalizations in 2011, and the catalyst for 1,038 suicide attempts. The National Library of Medicine warns ecstasy use causes permanent damage to critical serotonin receptors and has been the cause of depressive disorders, and the underlying cause for suicidal thoughts and tendencies among users.

How about we just skip the MDMA?

Mourning the murders of United States Marines, Gunner Sgt. Thomas Sullivan, Staff Sgt. David Wyatt, Sgt. Carson Holmguist, and Lance Cpl. Skip Wells, reports tell us the deranged gunman of Chattanooga, Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez, was denied drug addiction treatment when his insurance provider refused to cover treatment which may have avoided the travesty in Tennessee. The New York Daily times reports Abdulazeez’s private diary reveals a disturbed 24 year old man who struggled with addiction, and depression from the age of 12- according to his parents. Abdulazeez wanted to be a martyr, but instead, he has become a symbol of terror, and the source of devastation for the Chattanooga community and beyond.

According to the gunman’s parents, they encouraged their son to seek inpatient addiction treatment to get his addiction to drugs under control, but when his insurance company wouldn’t cover the bill for treatment Abdulazeez was sent to Jordan- as a last ditch effort to separate him from his life of addiction and negative influences. A self entitled “Muslin red-neck,” according to New York Daily News, Abdulazeez was fond of guns and began shooting squirrels early on. (Slaughtering animals is one of the red flags of a killer.)

After being arrested for driving under the influence, Abdulazeez spiraled into another bout of depression after returning from Jordan. It is alleged the gunman snorted cocaine (although Abdulazeez claimed the powdered substance found on his nose during his arrest was powdered caffeine) and may have smoked marijuana.

New York Daily News quotes the Abdulazeez family,

“There are no words to describe our shock, horror, and grief. The person who committed this horrible crime was not the son we knew and loved. For many years our son suffered from depression. It grieves us beyond belief to know that his pain found its expression in this heinous act of violence.”

Our hearts go out to the victims of the Chattanooga shooting and their bereaved families. No words can adequately convey our own shock and disbelief for the loss of our United States Marines, and injury of United States Military Servicemen.

New Study Suggests Jealousy and Low Self-Esteem In A Relationship Can Lead To Alcoholism

A study conducted by a team of researchers from University of Houston discovered that there is a link between a higher susceptibility for becoming an alcoholic and jealousy. However, researchers want to emphasize that jealousy typically stems from being enraptured in a bad relationship where a person’s value or self-esteem depends on their partner. These three factors can be attributed to the development of alcoholism.

In the study, researchers collected data from a sample of 300 people, the majority of which were women. The research participants were instructed to fill out questionnaires which were designed to measure their satisfaction or lack thereof in their romantic relationship, their self-esteem levels while in their relationship, alcohol use, and jealousy.New Study Suggests Jealousy and Low Self-Esteem In A Relationship Can Lead To Alcoholism

According to the study’s results, researchers discovered many of the participants turned their attention to alcohol as a means to deal with their feelings of jealousy. However, it tends to be more noticeable in those who admitted to being in a low-quality relationship.

Researchers further explained that when a person is apart of a bad relationship, negative emotions begin to take over which results in the person having an increased motivation to use alcohol until he or she feels they have coped with their feelings of jealousy, according to Youth Health Magazine.

Researchers are hopeful that based on the results from the study, experts will provide more significance on the effects of bad relationships and low self-esteem, especially on the tendency of a person becoming dependent on alcohol.

According to Youth Health Magazine, alcoholism is still the leading causes of preventable deaths in the United States, at least 80,00 people die annually as a result of excessive alcohol use. Alcohol heightens many risk factors such as car accidents and fatty liver disease, which often develops into cirrhosis or cancer if not treated properly.

Why do you think people in bad relationships turn to alcohol instead of walking away?

Akin to any addiction, overconsumption of junk…

Akin to any addiction, overconsumption of junk food causes the same tolerance building effects many addictive substances do. The reason why you reach for that extra cookie? You’re addicted! Well, perhaps mild junk food addiction isn’t enough to purport you have a chronic addiction problem, but the science behind junk food and saturated fat says we develop a tolerance to delicious, fatty foods- and enjoy them less. So what do we do? Reach for that second cookie. This behavior mirrors drug and alcohol addiction. As users of addictive substances are less sensitive to the first hit (or bite, in this case) and seek the high they experienced when first exposed to the addictive substance.

According to Yahoo Health studies have shown saturated fat causes more than just weight gain, but slowly destroys a critical chemical in the brain which safeguards us against Alzheimer’s disease. Fortunately mild cases of junk food addiction don’t typically need any special treatment, outside of being conscience of what you eat. The main objective when switching out addictive substances is not limitation, but expansion!

If you limit yourself to a restrictive diet it’s likely to fail- as is the same case with drug and alcohol addiction. Instead of foregoing everything, making healthy substitutions in your life is the key to overcoming any addiction. Did you know it takes 21 days to break a habit? If you take one day, one step at a time, anything is possible!

Read up on the top five ways to avoid cravings.
