Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez: Chattanooga Gunman Was Denied Drug Addiction Treatment

Mourning the murders of United States Marines, Gunner Sgt. Thomas Sullivan, Staff Sgt. David Wyatt, Sgt. Carson Holmguist, and Lance Cpl. Skip Wells, reports tell us the deranged gunman of Chattanooga, Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez, was denied drug addiction treatment when his insurance provider refused to cover treatment which may have avoided the travesty in Tennessee. The New York Daily times reports Abdulazeez’s private diary reveals a disturbed 24 year old man who struggled with addiction, and depression from the age of 12- according to his parents. Abdulazeez wanted to be a martyr, but instead, he has become a symbol of terror, and the source of devastation for the Chattanooga community and beyond.

According to the gunman’s parents, they encouraged their son to seek inpatient addiction treatment to get his addiction to drugs under control, but when his insurance company wouldn’t cover the bill for treatment Abdulazeez was sent to Jordan- as a last ditch effort to separate him from his life of addiction and negative influences. A self entitled “Muslin red-neck,” according to New York Daily News, Abdulazeez was fond of guns and began shooting squirrels early on. (Slaughtering animals is one of the red flags of a killer.)

After being arrested for driving under the influence, Abdulazeez spiraled into another bout of depression after returning from Jordan. It is alleged the gunman snorted cocaine (although Abdulazeez claimed the powdered substance found on his nose during his arrest was powdered caffeine) and may have smoked marijuana.

New York Daily News quotes the Abdulazeez family,

“There are no words to describe our shock, horror, and grief. The person who committed this horrible crime was not the son we knew and loved. For many years our son suffered from depression. It grieves us beyond belief to know that his pain found its expression in this heinous act of violence.”

Our hearts go out to the victims of the Chattanooga shooting and their bereaved families. No words can adequately convey our own shock and disbelief for the loss of our United States Marines, and injury of United States Military Servicemen.
