Flakka Infects California, Dupes Drug Tests, and Patients Are Slow to Recover

What has now become an infamous designer drug, known for the dangerous mental and physical states it induces users, flakka has now hit California. The west coast is reporting an influx of patient suffering from the effects of flakka when it hasn’t seen anyone on the drug before eight weeks ago, according to Local 12. So far flakka has been reported in Illinois, Ohio, Texas, Kentucky, California, and of course, Florida. Flakka has caused several deaths in Broward County, and its reach is becoming a national problem.

A quick search on YouTube will give you an inside look on how the drug affects people. The state known for their bizarre behavior is called heightened delirium- which inhibits the absorption of serotonin and dopamine-giving users the notion they can do anything. Did we mention they also have super human strength? A suspect high on flakka can take as many as six police officers to subdue.

Local 12 quotes Mike Haney, who admits to using flakka, and not being able to remember anything for the next two days, “I was completely out of my mind. I could have killed somebody. I could have killed myself.”

Because flakka is typically purchased online from Chinese chemists, the drug is continually changing in composition, which makes banning the substance difficult. If you recall, flakka is derived from bath salts- the drug responsible for the zombie-like nightmare in South Florida where a sleeping homeless man’s face was mostly eaten by a man high on bathsalts. Thus far, flakka has been the source of 25 deaths in Broward County alone.

The DEA’s Kevin Stanfill, who operates in Miami, is quoted by Local 12,

“We have individuals high on flakka coming up to parents with their kids and trying to take their kids. They’re not just getting high, they’re going out and hurting people. You don’t see that with a lot of the other drugs like you are with flakka right now.”

Flakka may be more addictive than cocaine and is less expensive than “molly” at $3-$5 per hit. Officers aren’t yet able to arrest those with a handful of flakka with the intent to sell, even though a handful is a considerable number of hits. Florida legislatures may adjust the law in the future.

To complicate matters, parents who are worried their children may be exposed to the drug and experimenting with it cannot rely on store bought drug tests. Flakka is “ahead of the curve” in terms of dodging positive test results, according to Local 12. Thus far there aren’t any tests available to the public which will zero in on the drug.

As if things weren’t dire enough, those recovering from flakka’s effects are taking several weeks longer to recoup from the addictive substance. In fact, long time crystal meth addicts recover before those with flakka use disorders do.

Is there a flakka problem in your neighborhood?
