According to reports from the Miami Herald News, Miami-Dade police are issuing a warning to parents and children about drug dealers who are selling drugs which are candy look-alikes.
During a drug bust in June, police recovered several pieces of what appeared to be hard candy which were actually drugs. The candy product was coated with ethylone, a synthetic drug which is similar to flakka, the cheap and newly popular drug wreaking havoc in South Florida.
Lieutenant Daniel Ferrin reportedly stated “It comes in a form of a candy and we want to alert the public so we can talk to our kids because it looks to us like they’re trying to target young kids,” according to Miami Herald News.
Ferrin presented the candy drugs confiscated back in June; it was presented in the form in which the ethylone generally comes in, which is little, dull-yellow crystals and multi-colored drugs. He warned parents and children alike not to accept loose-wrapped candy or any candy from strangers.
As a result, the effects of the candy imposers mimic symptoms of those using flakka, and similar drugs: those exposed stay up all night under the impression they’re seeing things that aren’t there. Law enforcement and fire rescue employees are up all night contending with, or against, the damage caused by the drugs.
“When we find them they are on the way to hospital or to the morgue. I have never seen anyone enjoying a flakka high. It’s about eight hours of sheer terror,” said Fort Lauderdale Fire Department Deputy Chief Timothy Heiser according to the Miami Herald.
An uptick in bizarre flakka-related incidents have been sweeping the region significantly, especially since the start of 2015.
