Tinted Windows, Marijuana, and Handcuffs- Oh My!: Rick Ross Arrested

Did you know Rick Ross grew up right here in Miami Gardens? Well it’s true, or at least that’s what Wikipedia says. The famed Rick Ross (officially dubbed William Leonard Roberts II) was arrested Wednesday in Georgia for possession of marijuana, according to CNN. Officers pulled him over on allegations of a tinted window infraction (Umhm!), and after getting the go-ahead from Ross, law enforcement officers found five joints of marijuana tucked away in the vehicle. The arrest took place in Fayette county, and Ross’ mugshot wasn’t released until after 2 a.m. The arresting officers who pulled Ross over claimed to smell marijuana in Ross’ shiny Bentley after making the initial stop, prompting the search. Why Ross submitted to a search? We’re not quite certain.

We don’t have many details yet, as Ross’ representatives haven’t issued an official statement. What we do know is this isn’t the first time the law has caught up with Ross, in regards to marijuana possession. According to AJC, this is Ross’ fourth marijuana infraction. The first recorded incident? Miami in 2008 (see, he was here!). The second occurred in Louisiana in 2011, and the third in North Carolina in 2013.

Because of his string of marijuana charges, we’re not sure how lenient the presiding judge will be with Ross, but if we could throw our two cents in there, I think detox and rehab are in order! Although marijuana is often touted as harmless (and don’t even get me started on the overdose rates of synthetic marijuana), about 17% of all marijuana smokers will become addicted to the substance. And yes, there are withdrawal symptoms- so it does exist. Although there hasn’t been any mention of the possibility of drug court or treatment options, Ross’ sling of marijuana charges haven’t seemed to make the impact the judiciary system would have liked, but maybe residential drug rehab will. It’s not enough to put someone with a substance use disorder behind bars and expect them to be cured of the condition.

Now before you start sharpening your pitchforks and setting things on fire, it’s not confirmed Ross actually has a chronic substance use disorder. But if he (or anyone else for that matter) does, treatment is the best way to go- as it makes the most meaningful impact in the way of resolving the physical and psychological addiction creates. In fact, even those experiencing mild substance abuse benefit from treatment; as it ensures the behavior does not progress into chronic addiction. Whatever the outcome, we wish Ross the best. We’re crossing our fingers for treatment over incarceration!
