$13.7M in Cocaine & Marijuana Recovered on Our Very Own Miami Shore, Doh!

As if Florida doesn’t get enough flack for our often questionable antics, $13.7 Million worth of cocaine and marijuana have been recovered from Miami’s shores on Friday, according to NBC Miami. The U.S. Coast Guard seized 328 kilograms of cocaine and a whopping 3,100 pounds (yes pounds) of marijuana in our own backyard. Who the heck can push all of that anyway? If you ask me, the smugglers were asking to get caught- and we’re glad they did before the illegal substances could be distributed throughout South Florida. We have enough to worry about already.

Law enforcement worked hand-in-hand with the special forces of Operation Martillo- which is an international effort made to combat the illegal trade of illicit substances, weaponry, and laundered money. The massive shipment was spotted on May 22nd by the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Bear and the Coast Guard Cutter Vigilant. They were originally tipped off by the Colombian Air Force in Northwest Colombia.

Those aboard the vessel carrying the illegal substances are now inbound to Miami’s prison. Tim Cronin the Coast Guard’s 7th District Deputy Chief of Enforcement is quoted by NBC Miami, “These individual seizures not only keep drugs off the streets and reduce the destabilizing effects they have on society, but they get our investigatory agencies one step closer to disabling the transnational criminal organizations and threaten the prosperity and security of free nations,” Well stated Chief!

Although we’re certain there will be more attempts to smuggle illicit substances onto the shores of Miami (it’s a problem the state government has been battling for decades) at least the combined efforts of Operation Martillo was able to sufficiently foil these attempts! And, let’s not ask what the universe is going to throw at us next, okay?
