41 People have Died in India After Drinking Toxic Alcohol

41 people have Died in India After Drinking Toxic Alcohol According to BBC News at least 41 people have died after consuming toxic alcohol in city of Mumbai, in western India.

Local police reported several residents from a Malad area slum became ill after drinking the alcohol. Currently over 20 people are being treated at the hospital and there is still fear that the death toll will rise.

Tayra Khan, the wife of one of the victims, shared with Mid-Day newspaper that her husband had been admitted to the hospital after “he complained of vomiting and pain in the stomach.” Khan says her husband then died three hours later, leaving her and her three small children behind.

Sadly, toxic alcohol deaths are a regular occurrence in India. People in India often drink cheap country liquor, in some cases the alcohol can be deadly. The “bootleg spirits” are often spiked with chemicals such as pesticides to increase their potency. India has fell victim to several other incidents of toxic alcohol deaths in the past. At least 29 people were killed after consuming toxic alcohol in Uttar Pradesh state this past January. Nearly 170 people died in 2011 in the eastern state of West Bengal. At least 30 people were killed in Uttar Pradesh in September 2009. More than 100 people were killed in Gujarat in July 2009, all according to BBC News.

Devendra Fadnavis, top elected official in Maharashtra state, has ordered an investigation and police are currently questioning suspects. Thus far only one suspect has been detained in the latest case of alcohol deaths which have taken place, according to BBC News.
