Homeowners Fear New Regulations Won’t Change Much In The Sober Homes In Their Neighborhoods

Homeowners Fear New Regulations Won't Change Much In The Sober Homes In Their NeighborhoodsA new law has just been passed in the state of Florida to better regulate the state’s sober homes. It has become a controversial issue of sober homes in South Florida neighborhoods not being run adequately. Despite the new law being set in place, neighbors of these South Florida sober homes still show concern.

Sober homes are developed with the intent to provide recovering addicts with a supportive and distraction-free environment to live in after completing rehab. These sober living communities are generally placed in quiet neighborhoods. However, neighbors of these sober homes are saying that these residences have turned their quiet communities upside down.

According to WPTV News, an unidentified Delray Beach woman said “People are sleeping with their alarms on, they’re putting cameras in front of their houses, they’re watching drug deals go down on a daily basis through the day.” The woman also shared that her neighborhood housed several sober homes designated for teens, many of which are poorly run. She described the sober homes for teens as having little supervision and allowing kids in the homes easy access to drugs and alcohol.

“These kids are not getting their second chance that they so deserved because of these bad operators,”says the Delray Beach woman.

The states new law, HB 21, requires sober homes to be certified, inspected, and maintained to meet a certain standard, as a means to receive referrals from licensed treatment centers. Unfortunately, the certification is not required, which leaves neighbors of these sober homes worried that the new law won’t change much in their neighborhoods.

The new law is set to be effective as of July 1. Palm Beach Post has reported that it may take time for the new system to be fully functioning.
