Season 8 The Voice Contestant: Anthony Riley Found Dead After Battle With Substance AbuseAnthony Riley, a 28-year-old who appeared on season eight of The Voice lost the battle to depression and substance abuse. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Riley was found dead Friday, June 5th. His death is being ruled as suicide. Sources say Riley was found in the basement of his Philadelphia apartment building.

Riley was very popular in the Center City area of Philadelphia, he could be found singing Motown hits and pop songs for tips on the busy Center City streets. He usually performed at some of Center City’s most popular landmarks including outside of the Reading Terminal Market, Penn’s Landing, and Independence Hall. Riley’s popularity and talent lead to him being named the city’s best street performer in 2014 by Philadelphia Magazine.

NBC’s The Voice had been Riley’s “big break.” After his audition he become the most popularized contestant. His raw talent forced all four of The Voice’s judges to fight over him. However, hitmaker Pharrell Williams had the honor of being Riley’s coach. Riley became a fan favorite on the show, however his time on the show was short lived.

After completing and winning his first battle round on the show, Riley informed the show’s producers he was battling substance abuse issues and would return home to Philadelphia to seek drug and alcohol addiction treatment.

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Riley said that the stress and long hours which came along with being a contestant on the show were “more responsibility than I could handle,” however Riley stated that the show had been a great source of support.

Riley’s friends and family say that once Riley left the show, he had been working on his own album, however he still continued to battle with addiction.

“He’d had his problems recently. But at the heart of it all he was very kind, gentle person,” says one of Riley’s fellow musicians, Robby Parsons during an interview with the Philadelphia Inquirer.
