Are Music Festivals Becoming ‘Drug Supermarkets?’ New York Police Believe So

New York Police Claim The Sterling Music Festival Was A 'Drug Supermarket'
According to Time Warner Cable News an undercover operation was carried out by the New York State Police Community Narcotics Team during the Sterling Music Festival in Oswego County, NY, which took place May 21 to 24. The team of undercover agents were able to make a total of 46 drug buys throughout the weekend of the festival. Oswego District Attorney Gregory Oakes revealed that the undercover operation was apart of an ongoing investigation in relation to the sale and distribution of illegal drugs at music festivals. “We are vigorously prosecuting drug dealers and seeking state prison.” said Oakes.

According to New York State Police, thousands of dollars worth of drugs and over $40,000 in cash had been recovered by police at the Sterling Music Festival. State police say $10,000 to $15,000 worth of hallucinogenic mushrooms were seized and thousands of dollars worth of other various drugs, including “marijuana wax”, a highly potent form of marijuana.

In an interview, State Police Major David Krause stated “This was pretty much like an open-air drug supermarket. There was no hiding this or hiding what substances that were available for sale.”

Krause also added that even some of the festival’s vendors had advertised the drug sales. The officer revealed that there had been signs posted listing which drugs were available for sale, and that there were even people walking around with licit and illicit substances carried on a tray or by hand, offering the drugs to festival attendees.

Various illegal substances were being sold at the festival including cocaine, MDMA, hallucinogenic mushrooms, hash, and prescription medications. Krause shared that a total of 14 people were arrested at the festival for the sale of illegal substances.  Police had also made several arrests outside of the festival’s venue; nine were arrested for criminal possession of a controlled substance, one for DWI, and 21 were arrested for unlawful possession of marijuana.

State police reported that many of the dealers had been from out of state, and some had traveled all the way from California.

More attention is being geared towards the use and sale of drugs at music festivals across the nation, police are finally taking a stand to help crackdown on the illegal activities.
