Soberoo: Your Musical Festival Experience Doesn’t Have To Be Filled With Indulging in Drugs and Alcohol

MTV News is promoting Bonnaroo’s new sober initiative which encourages music festival-goers to put the drugs and booze down, and just enjoy the festival experience with their friends and favorite bands.

Bonaroo, an annual music and arts festival, is held every summer on a 700-acre farm in Manchester, Tennessee. The festival lasts for four days and boasts a series of diverse music performances and art showcases. Although music festivals have become known for binge drinking and illicit drug use, Bonnaroo is trying to help shed that image. The insightful curators of Bonnaroo came up with the amazing idea for festival attendees to have the ultimate experience in a clean fashion: Soberoo.

When describing what Soberoo is, Bonaroo’s website writes “Music and community are the calling card of a beautiful experience on The Farm. And for Bonnaroovians who choose to remain clean and sober while enjoying the festival, Soberoo is a group that will support you with regular fellowship and daily meetings. They’re not affiliated with any other support groups so the only requirement for membership is a desire to stay substance-free at the festival!”

According to MTV News, when reporters inquired about the origin of the Soberoo initiative,  Rick Farma, a co-founder of Bonnaroo said “It happened really organically. A lot of the fans we first programed at the festival, already had groups like that which were affiliated with a particular band. So they’ll play a regular show, [and] their sober fans would congregate.”

“It’s really grown to be something that’s been a model for other festivals around the country and around the world,” shared Farman.

Bonnaroo is one of the first of it’s kind to promote sobriety at its event, hopefully many more festivals will adopt this trend to help end the dangerous trend of binge drinking and illicit drug use at music festivals and concerts.
