According to NBC News, officials say the U.S. Coast Guard ambushed a homemade submarine last month and recovered $181M worth of cocaine near the coast of Mexico, but even more cocaine was left on the ship when it sank. This bust has been deemed the biggest of it’s kind in the U.S. Coast Guard’s history.
Reports revealed that on July 18th the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Stratton intercepted the 40- foot homemade submarine in the Pacific Ocean just 200 miles south of Mexico Four alleged smugglers were arrested and 275 bales of cocaine. The Stratton also attempted to tow the semi-submersible submarine to shore, however it sank with 4,000 pounds of cocaine still remaining inside.
“Every interception of these semi-submersibles disrupts transnational organized crime networks and helps increase security and stability in the Western Hemisphere,” said the commander of the Pacific area, Coast Guard Vice Admiral Charles W. Ray. Coast in a statement.
According to officials, as the U.S. Navy spotted the blue-colored submarine and soon notified the Coast Guard of the sighting. These types of semi-submersible boats have become a favorite of Colombian drug smugglers who have used the form of transportation for over a decade. The boats can be hard to recognize in the air due to only being able to see the cockpit area and an exhaust pipe from the sky.
This bust is just one of the few of which the U.S. Coast has successfully executed. Since 2006, at least 25 other similar vessels have been stopped within the Eastern Pacific in the past nine years, according to the Coast Guard.
The Stratton has it’s own history of making successful drug seizures, the boat was also successful in busting another semi-submersible boat in which they recovered 5,460 pounds of cocaine.
