New Study Suggests Getting Married Can Help You Beat Alcoholism

 

According to Yahoo News, a new study has suggested that marriage can result in a  significant reduction in alcohol consumption, even in those who are severely addicted to alcohol.

Research conducted by a team of researchers at the University of Missouri discovered that a dramatic change in one’s role such as becoming a husband or wife, can significantly help people beat alcoholism and get on the “straight and narrow.”

Matthew Lee, a postdoctoral fellow from University of Missouri says: “A key conceptual framework psychologists use to explain maturing out and the ‘marriage effect’ is role-incompatibility theory. The theory suggests that if a person’s existing behavourial pattern is conflicting with the demands of a new role, such as marriage, one way to resolve the incompatibility is to change behaviour,” according to New York Times.

The University of Missouri study used data collected from a huge, ongoing study of familial alcohol disorders conducted by the Department of Psychology at Arizona State University. According to the study, about 50 percent of the participants in the study were children to parents suffering from alcoholism. By observing the alcohol consumption changes of participants between the ages of 18 and 40, and whether or not they got married, scientists were able to conclude that getting married can help combat against the disease of alcoholism.

Dr. Lee says that by his team confirming their prediction was correct, they were able to find that marriage not only led to reductions in heavy drinking in general, the effects of marriage were much stronger for those who suffered from severe problem drinking before getting married. the results are consistent with the role incompatibility theory. The researchers believe that the study is capable of playing a key role in understanding problem drinking and alcoholism in the future.
