Scientists Suggest Drinking Pear Juice Before Consuming Alcohol Can Prevent Hangovers

New research suggests drinking pear juice before drinking alcohol could help prevent hangovers and lower blood alcohol levels. Researchers say that drinking 200ml of pear juice prior to drinking alcohol, or simply eating pears has been found to be effective in limiting the effects of a hangover and lowering the levels of alcohol in a person’s blood, according to The Independent.
The study’s findings were provided by CSIRO, Australia’s national science agency, in collaboration with Horticulture Innovation Australia to observe the effects of drinking pears on individuals who drink alcohol.

The scale determined that the effects of a hangover were “significantly reduced” by drinking Korean pear juice, and that it had been most effective in avoiding the issue of “trouble concentrating.”

According to the researchers, the effects essentially only happen when the pear juice is consumed prior to drinking, not after.

Thus far, researchers have only studied the effects of the Korean or Asian pear, this product has been used for many years as a traditional hangover cure. However, they do plan to conduct further research to determine whether or not the same results can be attained through the use of other types of pears. There are a number of differences in the composition of the Korean or Asian pear and other types of pears,

Currently, scientists are still uncertain of what exactly pears do which makes them effective in preventing hangovers.

“It appears that the factors in Korean pears act on the key enzymes involved in alcohol metabolism, alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) to speed up alcohol metabolism and elimination or inhibition of alcohol absorption. In particular, reductions were seen in blood acetaldehyde levels, the toxic metabolic thought to be responsible for the hangover symptoms, with pear juice consumption,”

says Manny Noakes, a professor and leader of the study in a statement, as quoted by The Independent.
