Alcoholics Unite! Amazon Introduces 1 Hour Booze Delivery

Despite my initial enthusiasm for being able to order my favorite drink ingredients right to my door- like pizza- I’ve come to realize Amazon’s new one hour delivery for alcohol is a terrible idea! According to Reuters Amazon’s growing hourly delivery service, Prime Now (because two day shipping isn’t fast enough), is not only introducing the sale of wine, beer, and spirits to the United States, but Seattle residents will participate in a trial run of their new hourly alcohol service.

This may sound convenient, but how the heck is Amazon going to manage refusing people booze who’ve already had too much to drink? Does the box come with a mini bartender equipped to confiscate keys?

Although the pilot trial may be interesting to watch, to gauge just how much people will use this service, the impending detriments of the ease of availability of alcohol are concerning- to say the very least. Even if delivery men and women must verify if recipients are 21 or older, do we really need yet another avenue in which alcohol is easily obtained?

Although alcohol use disorders are largely brushed under the rug, one in every 12 adults suffers from the condition. According to the NCADD, that’s 17.6 million Americans. Some don’t consider alcohol a drug (I used to be one of the woefully uninformed), but in fact, alcohol is the most widely used addictive substance to date in the states. The only reason why we don’t immediately associate alcohol as a depressant drug is because it’s used so frequently that we, as a collective, decided to remove alcohol from social standing with other depressant drugs.

This disassociation has proven fatal to many swept away in its wanton use. Can you imagine heroin commercials?

Amazon now delivers alcoholAnd yes, there are many who are able to drink responsibly- it’s certainly not impossible, but there are many who cannot, for either environmental or genetic reasons, taper their consumption to moderate use. The FDA recommends consuming only four drinks in a week for women and five for men. Those who exceed these recommended guidelines typically lose more than 10,000 brain cells when compared to their moderate drinking peers.

Untreated alcohol use disorders manifest a slew of other complications, like delirium tremens, trouble at home, in the professional realm, and may end up with hefty fines- or even jail time- for public intoxication or DUI.

Amazon has not yet released when and if their one hour alcohol delivery services will be available across the entire United States.
