Two South Florida Mothers Accused of Child Neglect and Drug Abuse

A Florida woman was recently arrested on charges of child neglect and drug possession.

The Sun Sentinel reports that 21 year old Tamisha Burnell of Coconut Creek was arrested on August 9th when a welfare check for her 10-month old child resulted in suspected drug use. Officers performing the welfare check detected the scent of burning marijuana in a Deerfield Beach LaQuinta Inn & Suites hotel room with the baby present. When officers continued their investigation, they discovered a container labeled as the infant formula Enfamil containing crack cocaine and heroin.

Oxycodone and drug paraphernalia was also recovered, resulting in the baby being removed from the mother’s custody. Burnell was arrested on charges of possession and child neglect without great harm. Erik Sanchez, 21, was also present in the hotel room and arrested on similar charges as well as probation violation. The pair is also suspected of trafficking.

Burnell is not the only South Florida mother to put illegal substances before her child. As recent as July another mother was arrested for neglect in association with drugs. Briana Hoxter, 25, was arrested outside of a Greenacres Metro PCS store for selling drugs out of a stroller with the baby inside of it. Palm Beach County police arrived after receiving complaints from a customer of the cell phone provider and searched the woman’s person.

While she had nothing on her person, she consented to a search of the stroller which resulted in police discovering Xanax, heroin, and materials associated with heroin use. The woman claimed she was not selling drugs at all, telling officers that the heroin was fiber and that she was prescribed Xanax but could not offer proof. Like Burnell, Hoxter’s child was also removed from her custody and she was charged with child abuse, possession of drugs and paraphernalia, and held in Palm Beach County Jail with a bond of $4,500.

Do you believe mother’s should lose custody of their children if suspected of drug abuse or trafficking?
