Deadly Flakka Is Being Laced into Cocaine, Heroin, Methamphetamine, and Ecstasy in South Florida Leading to Death

 

Although the laundry list of drugs including heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine, and ecstasy are known for their adverse health effects, overdose tolls, and contribution to the development of chronic health conditions, the induction of flakka into these already addictive substances is cementing the fates of many, who do not know flakka has been laced into their illegal drugs on South Florida’s streets. Flakka is a synthetic drug which sells for $3-$5 dollars a pop illegally, and is the source of bizarre behavior, acute liver failure, and heightened delirium (causing violent bouts of hallucinations). According to the Sun Sentinel drug dealers are cutting their illicit wares with flakka because it’s so inexpensive, exposing consumers of illegal substances to the dangerous addition- so says Jim Hall, or Nova Southeastern University.

Overdose deaths have risen because of the induction of flakka mixed with other substances. It is almost guaranteed for a cocktail of drugs mixed in with flakka to result in an accidental overdose. The strings of overdoses among Broward County involving flakka typically involved other substances like Xanax, cocaine, and ketamine (commonly known as Special K).

Because of the seriousness of Flakka, Broward County has launched a flakka task force, with the intent to zero in on the sources of flakka and eliminate them from the streets. However, because flakka is easily obtained on the internet, many are able to become “overnight drug dealers.” Officers are having problems taking in drug dealers on manufacturing charges because doses of flakka are very small- as such, dealers only need to carry around a handful of the substance- but that is not enough to validate an arrest for manufacturing, despite having several doses of the deadly drug.
