UCF Sororities Go Dry for Recruitment Week

UCF Sororities Go Dry For Recruitment Week

With the new college semester beginning in the coming weeks, excited freshmen and returning students are preparing to take the plunge of a lifetime- pledging to a sorority or fraternity. There’s a number of reasons to choose to pledge ranging from forming friendships and important connections to continuing a family tradition. The commitment and dedication it takes to make it through recruitment and spirit week and be accepted as part of a sorority or fraternity sets those students who succeed above the rest. This year the Panhellenic sororities of UCF are taking it further with a new challenge: this year’s hopefuls must abstain from alcohol and are prohibited from the local bar scene.

The University of Central Florida’s Knight News reports that the number of intended sorority pledgers outnumbers last years record at 872 to 833. In order to keep the recruitment process and activities secretive current members must deactivate their social media accounts. Hours of work and planning go into the preparation for the festivities. Formal recruiting begins on August 15th and ends on the 22nd with potential members attending a preference night where they rank their top three choices and the sororities choose their new members. The next morning the new pledges will wake to find a bid card with their name and the name of their new college family.

While the members of the Panhellenic sororities at UCF are testing the dedication of their potential sisters through sobriety, their brother fraternities are showing their good-natured support through humorous posts to their social media pages. Members of the fraternities have posted pictures of empty bar stools and lone beers ‘mourning’ the lack of their sisters’ company.

With the heavy partying and drinking associated with the last few weeks of summer, those who have chosen to abstain in order to prove themselves to their intended pledges show a dedication and commitment that sets them above their peers.

Do you agree with the drinking restriction on potential sorority recruits?
